Numerology Five12

Recommended Posts

So I just bought Numerology Pro3. I wanted a new working environment and it stood out. I guess because I don't personally know anyone who uses it. I searched the forum for mentions but they were thin on the ground. I just wanted to see what others thought of it, likes dislikes etc. I'm not using it to control hardware, just in itself. I really like it so far. The discrete sequencing is awesome and some of the stacks people have built are insane.

Also how people are using it? I have read about rewiring it through Logic/Ableton. Anything on that? I foresee real limitations on its editing abilities but I guess that's not really what its about. People are doing some great stuff with Launchpads too.

For me there is something almost meditative/hypnotic about step sequencing in this way. I'm loving it.

there is another thread, but I can't remember what it's called...

anyway, I fucking love numerology it's awesome. use it to control my Dark Energy, MFB SynthLite II, TR-626 and some other bits and bobs that occasionally appear on my desk... only got v2 but have downloaded the v3 demo and am very impressed - I particularly like the evolve feature and the pattern arranger.

I create patterns in numerology then multi-track them into Logic for arranging/chopping up etc.

and i'm going to say this, your new method is working for you QUITE WELL.

When you say multi-track do you mean using rewire to sync Num with Logic or recording into Logic?

ya I made a thread here a while back about it. It's great. I haven't looked at v3 yet, but i hope they got the arrange window sorted out better. It was the weak link before. I had spent some time trying to work out a way to control it from ableton (sending program change messages) stored in clips, to change the patterns. Never got it going though. :( Since I have stopped digging into Live. :D I'd love to give it another go using Logic as the arranger... I also want to look into the AU and VST modules they have made from their individual sequencers. That looks rad. :)

I just sync numerology to logic's midi clock so when I press play in logic, numerology starts and stays in sync etc...then record the patterns numerology is sending out to my synths etc into logic as audio files.

  • 1 year later...

I'm now creating some really cool control scenes on the microKontrol for launching presets and other stuff. It's a fantastic program with honestly way more possibly than any other sequencer I've ever used.

I think I'll buy the SE version and see if it's got what I need. I just grabbed the demo to make sure before pulling the trigger.

If you're curious what it can do check out all the posts by this dude named TwoToneshuzz on the forum there in the Tips and Tricks section. He's completely insane. He said he's going to build a rack rig out of 4 mac minis for some performance tour he's planning :|

N3Pro user here (read my name backward and you have my name on Five12's message board).

It's a fantastic app. Its only downside is that it doesn't support multi-threading rendering for AUi, which can lead easily to CPU overloads as N3 won't use all the cores of your computer yet. But Jim is working on it.

I add many issues finding the right set-up, and finally I'm using N3Pro rewired to Live to stream MIDI datas. Ableton hosts the AUi, and thanks to Ableton's custom MIDI range you can overcome the loss of precision when it comes to output CVs from N3 to MIDI. It's the most efficient/stable way I've found yet. I use CPU monsters synths like DIva and Aalto, so stability and overall CPU performance is a pretty important stuff to me. As everything relies on MIDI mapping, I can switch from N3 rewired to N3 stand-alone as a MIDI remote controller with no hassle. I just wish Live didn't smooth so much automations curves, so that I could record the MIDI datas for further edits instead of having to record to audio my synths's output.

BCM, do you have much latency with your set-up ? For whatever reason I've not succeeded yet to send MID clock from Ableton (don't understand why).

yeah the latency is a bit of an issue actually. say if I record a synth pattern as audio out of numerology into reaper (now using reaper instead of logic) and then some drums onto a separate track in reaper etc it's all good and syncs up perfectly. but if I then just add a track done purely in reaper, say another drum track done on the piano roll, then it's slightly out of time...

I've actually got a rather convoluted setup where I run the outputs of my soundcard (edirol FA-101) back into itself (literally with cables) and set numerology to send audio to the outs and reaper to record audio from the ins... probably a better way to do things but I like the way the edirol colours the sound and adds a bit of character...

edit: this setup is only when I'm purely working with soft synths though of course.

hey impakt ! ;D

such a long time since we last talk ! how are you doing man ? I'd love to hear what you'd come up with using Numerology, it really is a fantastic, deep sequencer. and it does wonders when it comes to acidish stuffs and more generally speaking synth modulations. it's the core of my set-up now.

BCM : thanks for your answer ! unfortunately the only latency-free option is N3 VST, but then you can't enjoy some N3's ClockGroove madness (and the way it outputs CCs isn't convenient at all, at least with Live) !

maybe you should try Jackpilot instead ? it maybe a bit less convulted set-up, and you can still re-record your stems through your soundcard if you like its color. I'm a former Reaper user, I switched to Live because of Reaper's instability when using N3 rewired to it, and also because you can't precisely set a custom modulation range for MIDI CCs targets the same way you can with Ableton. I love Reaper though, and miss lots of its features when using Live.

I had Numerology when it first came out. It helped a lot in terms of generative midi data, I think i've moved on as I lost all desire to return to it.

you're welcome BCM !

@acid1 : I also had Numerology early version years ago, then totally forgot about it until few months ago. now it's my main MIDI sequencer, controlling Ableton which I use more like a plugin host and a recorder/mixer. v3 is a huge step forward from v1.

I've been wanting to try this for a long time but I never got around to buying a Mac. Anyone running this on something old like a <2GHz Mac Mini?

Also is this app so awesome that it's worth getting a Mac for? There's a few things I also use with OSX versions (Reaper, Renoise, Usine, Reaktor), and my computer is kind of old but I don't really want to dump all my disposable income on a Mac.

Also I don't think SC has a mac version :/ Oh yeah neither does the Nord Modular G1 editor :/ :/

SuperCollider ? it has an OSX version too.

there's no equivalent of Numerology in the PC/linux world yet.

if you're not sure about switching to mac, maybe the hackintosh route is worth considering. You can always switch back to Win/Linux with an hackintosh. You can even run the 3 OS on the same computer. I've been been running a hackintosh for more than a year now, it's dead stable and damn powerful, for a fraction of the price of a Mac Pro.

by the way you can already test Numerology on your mac mini, it should run without a sweat. Numerology itself isn't CPU demanding.

DUH. SC?? Of course you thought I meant SuperCollider! I meant ShortCircuit, my favorite VST sampler.

Hackintosh is a good idea. Drivers might be annoying but at least I can try before dump the minimum $400 or so into Mac Mini + Numerology license.

yeah the CPU load depends on whether you're using it to just run outboard gear (in which case the load is very minimal and it should run fine on quite low-end systems) or using it to sequence a load of softsynths and FX, or a mixture of both...

I've just realized you can also use you mac mini only for Numerology, so that it turn your mac mini as a quite powerful MIDI controller for your hardware and PC.
