like i said, Mind Bokeh is a pastiche of a pastiche. Ambivalence Avenue was without a doubt very authentic sounding, the mastering and EQing was done to reflect the kind of recording and mastering done "back in the day".

but Mind Bokeh has too clean of a sound, even for the tracks that are obviously meant to sound vintage. if you're gonna do a job, do it properly. and it was obviously implied that the "vintage tracks" were meant to sound vintage. so why don't they?

This might be too random of a reference, but when I read this, I thought of Frog Pocket's last two albums. Gonglot vs. Primates has that same sanitized feeling, where wonderfully chaotic music turned into a cleaner, "chaos by numbers" sort of tone, and the music suffered as a result. Or something.

I think Bibio is trying a bit too hard on this album...

Moves like trying to incorporate the off-kilter drums and loose-focused songs of the new Flying Lotus record are a bit sloppy and lame

He should stick to what he's good at.. which IS quite good at: "detatched" jams like Feminine Eye, funky production like "Light Sleep", and that sax solo that ends Pretentious

Oh and 'Take off Your Shirt' is really pathetic.. It's only "cool" if youre really hammered, which isnt saying much

haven't listened to this yet...

would just like to say that while i really liked Ambivalence Avenue, it was made all that much more enjoyable with Vignetting The Compost being released the same year.

i hope he's still able to release the acoustic style ambience side of his music : O

There are a few tracks that start out with vocals and aren't so hot, but halfway through he stops singing and the instrumental bits totally save the song! I'm really diggin' the album as a whole, though probably slightly less than AA

the packaging is much nicer than the album.

My reaction exactly. So far my least favorite Bibio record. It has it's moments but on the whole it has been a disappointment.

indeed a beautiful package.

i was expecting a better record tho. i can feel his intention of moving towards new directions, but such intention still doesn't sound clear and ambitious to me.

while there are wonderful moments as k is for kelson or the sweet feminine eye, there are also weird things that pop up from nowhere, like take off your shirt. and all those mixed in one record sound confusing to me.

it's not about keeping it just like before and avoiding change but, for me, Mind Bokeh will be one of those records from which i listen to a few songs and carry on.

I'm glad that after all the negative comments in this thread I bought the album and actually like it, a lot. Not exactly a million miles from Ambivalence Avenue, and certainly not from the 'new' tracks that cropped up on The Apple And The Tooth.

Saint Christopher is the only track that really caught me.

Apart from Take Off Your Shirt the rest seem okay.

For the moment, it seems like a Squarepusher situation.

In other words, i like the stuff the gave Bibio his name a lot more than where he is heading and fair play to him for trying something different :)

Pitchfork review is really spot on this time

  Quote
Mind Bokeh is no less daring than Ambivalence Avenue, and it covers just as much ground, but here you can feel Wilkinson bumping up against his limitations. His talent for production is fully intact, but some odd choices sabotage the record. Instrumental sections like the title cut and the closing “St. Christopher” show a sound technician firmly in command of his material, folding twinkly keyboards, crackly loops, and gently insistent beats into tracks that are evocative and detailed enough to reveal more with repeated listens. Wilkinson’s terrific understanding of sound is undiminished, and he still moves easily between genres and gets most of the key details right. But the further he explores recognizable song forms, the more often the album stumbles.

In the case of “Take Off Your Shirt”, that stumble becomes a full-on face plant. Wilkinson’s exploratory spirit is a wonderful thing, but glammy power pop in the vein of Phoenix is something he should absolutely, positively leave to someone else. With its blocky guitar riff and canned beat, “Shirt” is stiff and downright unlikable. Fortunately, it doesn’t get any worse, but there are still too many ho-hum moments that feel weirdly off.
