finally caught up to romulus.

1st half somewhat flawed, mostly due to a completely, and i mean com-pleeeete-ly, bland & charisma-free cast (maybe with exception of the bot, ironically), but setpieces / love for details were nice and seeing fresh aspects of the cinematic universe of the first film (mining planet) had some genuine allure alright. so yea, solid foundation.

but then... oof indeed.

the ending is basically alien 4 without renowned actors and the goofy fun factor. truly terrible.

... jesus. but most of all: WHY? was it worth the fan service? not in the least imo.

talk about wasted potential. oh well.

romularse popped up on yuotube; so tried watching but couldn't even.

all these played-out franchises jsut da worst; derivative ideas, derivative worlds, characters & stories all predictable af; cover band of a cover band.

imagine if classic films/artworks were left alone, to shine - as is - rather than be smothered in mainstream sauce. imagine if alive artists were paid to create, rather than these mega studios still leeching off of giger, bannon, moebieus etc. ffs, can't anybody invest in originality anymoar ?

i watched it on yt as well, popped up in my recommendations, so i gave it a go when i had some time to kill

the intro scenes with the kids are very cliché and completely predictable, without substance and thrown out only for the story to begin...it doesn't matter... not to mention it somehow seemed plausible to the writer(s) that a derelict was orbiting the mining planet (about to hit the surface, btw!!!), and got picked up by some scavanger kids who have access to a orbit-capable space ship. one girl is pregnant - just some asshole, it doesn't matter, because nothing really matters. the throwback one liners are stupid. the stoner dude is suddenly a deus ex machina, for a moment, out of nowhere... facehuggers are extremely aggressive which is an interesting take, but it really doesn't matter, because they could have worn santa hats at this point, it just doesn't matter, it's all about money, and the magic is gone (it's just a vehicle to show more gore and grotesque alien monsters - doesn't matter, because another director will come after Alvarez and just shit all over the franchise with his own alien-human hybrid monster version)...

Had the same experience- was really hard to watch after also the generic kids were introduced and by your description it doesn’t get better. Going to give it another go later this evening

I really wonder why they do these things. Looks like the script was just copy pasted directly from another movie or they asked Chat GPT to create some generic characters and put them into the alien movie setting. Is this what they are paid for?

Though I didn't mind it, I think I told myself that so I didn't feel too bad about blowing £20 at the cinema watching it. If I was honest I think your review is pretty spot on.

the worst I find is that, up until a few years ago, I thought hey, why is nobody doing full on practical effects anymore. I hated that in Prometheus, the computers were newer than in the old Alien films.

But that was shit thoughts.

Fast forward to today, where we have these awkward and tedious nostalgia products. Started big time with the retro Star Wars and Stranger Things. It’s like, the brain cells of whoever comes up with that stuff cannot at the same time compute something good AND nostalgic.

They must know that, hey, we have a script that’s really bad. But if we put faux-stopmotion sauce on it, it will sell anyway.

it’s a whole genre,

This is regretful.

^ +1 , this hegemonic & constrictive retro(tried & tested/safe as houses) formula in place across so-called culture has become its own genre; an appeasing brand-based & derivative norm in film, painting, music, fashion etc - franchise taint, imo

I was a big fan of the Alien Earth Wars comic book series when I was a kid. I’m sure the plot of the new show won’t be the same.
Loved the cover art.

This series got it right. It came out before Alien 3 and followed an adult Newt and an aged Hicks as badass xenomorph hunters. Meanwhile, I think Ripley has some desk job or something. When Alien 3 came out and killed off newt and hicks in the first 5 seconds of the film, I was heartbroken. Honestly, I never really got over it.

Same with the original AVP series on Dark Horse. Great concept: Predator gets separated from his clan while hunting bugs for sport and left for dead, only to be rescued by humans, whom he befriends and protects as an act of honor, even if protecting them means against his own clan. Good stuff.

Anyway, that new series will probably be good for a laugh.
