why on earth would anyone want vinyl to end?

Long answer: Creating large discs of non-biodegradable, non-recyclable, toxic polyvinyl-chloride so that a bunch of faux audiophiles can pretend that having a record pressed from digital productions/masters actually sounds better because of the inclusion of surface noise and loss of frequency range, only to have them sound progressively worse with each play until 10 years later it's rendered unlistenable. There's nothing more wasteful and excessive in the realm of physical media than vinyl. The only reason it's still clinging to life by a thread is elitist hipsters who want to show off that they have one of 400 pressings of some release, only to later listen to the digital version on their iPods on the bus.

you have no idea how angry you've just made me.

It honestly sounds like some of you guys think that everything the hipsters have embraced is to be eliminated as fast as possible, that being formats such as vinyl and tape. So we should all just stick to CDs because of its tiny level of obscurity? I personally buy vinyl records because I'm more able to immerse myself in the music with it. And the artwork is a lot more fascinating in bigger formats, gatefolds and what not.

I actually do think the hipster 'culture' is going to either die out this year or enter a new phase. Hopefully for the better.

Hello! I am an old fart and I am rather fed up with people waving their cameras/cameraphones at gigs.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

for the sake of my sanity, i'm going to have to assume that you're joking.

actual red mist, i dont even know exactly how simple idiot internet words could make me so upset. surely cant people actually think that way about vinyls? on an (admittidly undanceable and awkward) style of electronic music forum?

have you never even heard of djing?

im getting trolled. enough

hah, i knew i was getting trolled.

If labelling me a troll makes you feel better about my disagreeing with your preference, all the power to you. Just recognize that, instead of providing an alternative view to what I'm presenting, you're basically just resorting to name calling.

Truth be told, though, I find it baffling that such a large chunk (or more likely, vocal minority) of the electronic music community still holds vinyl up on a lofty pedestal. Cinephiles are all too enthused to watch Blu-Rays of their favorites on large high definition displays, yet in this very small niche of the music world it's considered better to have your music on a storage medium that's been obsolete for a very long time. If that's your personal aesthetic preference, fine, but don't make it out like these thoughts are lesser or invalid because I don't personally subscribe to the church of vinyl.

Vinyl is just a flat-out inferior format to store music, and an inferior controller for DJing, especially when the source of all the music is digital. There's a self-perpetuating meme that the sound coloration caused by a loss of certain frequencies and the addition of surface noise makes the sound better. I've concluded that most vinyl-only DJs in 2011 are so because (1) they learned to DJ on vinyl and don't want to learn to use that evil new digital equipment, (2) are younger folk getting into DJ who desperately want the respect of group 1 and feel that using digital controllers would cause them to get looked down upon. It's most likely a combination of the two.

My personal distaste for it stems from how environmentally unfriendly it is, but the more I look at it, the more it seems like vinyl is still so popular amongst that very vocal minority is because they think it makes them better DJs or music enthusiasts in the eyes of others if they listen to/mix it in that format.

So if that makes me a troll in your eyes, fair enough.

PS Everyone's music is converted to analog the moment it leaves their soundcard or iPod and hits the headphone jack. :emotawesomepm9:

Considering that most man-made things are made in extremely environmentally unfriendly/resource hogging ways, this is a pretty invalid reason for singling out vinyl.

yeah i was kind of with Autopilot in a devil's advocate sense until he made that the primary reason of his distate for vinyl.

i just really like the experience of playing records, it forces me to have a longer attention span, the art is great to have in a large size and i love sampling from them.

but from a DJ standpoint i could see how one would want to 'rebel' against the doctrine of 'vinyl makes you a better dj' because yes its absolute bullshit. Most DJs who worship vinyl are idiots, they think they understand the difference between analog/digital yet none of them have ever made a track.

People like vinyl and tape because it doesn't sound perfect and it has another feeling to it. Perhaps a sense of nostalgia. The hiss does add something to many music styles.

hah, im just fooling around because i do indeed think that your viewpoint is completely and utterly wrong and ridiculous.

how much do you actually go clubbing? how many dj's do you actually see a week? because id say techno is one of my fiercest passions, and see around 15 dj's a week, probably 70% techno and 30% anything from dubstep, to dnb, to breakbeats, to eclectic, to reggae, to italo disco, fidget house, and id say of the 15 djs, 10 are local, 3 are respected and have ben brought in as a guest, 1 or if im lucky 2 a week are truely world class masters of their profession.

dont get me wrong, im not even slightly saying that digital djing is bad, i myself dj with either cdj's or traktor vinyl pads if they are available, simply because while i ultimately aspire to be a decent dj using vinyl, simply put i would need at least 500 pound a week to actualy afford the collection

but as an electronic music fan, i cant believe you think vinyl is obselte. for a start, the beatmatching. you can hear the difference between someone beatmatching with vinyl to someone beatmatching with traktor autosync in about 5 seconds flat, because the traktor mix will sound flat, bland, and perfect. vinyl beatmatching is A) technically much more impressive, although i concede that necassarily doesnt matter B) so much lusher and more real sounding. you dont need real viynl for this though, you get exactly the same effect with traktor timecode vinyl pads for a fraction of the cost of a vinyl collection, but if you are truely obbsessive about dance, listening to someone bring in a tune on autosync is frankly, dull and dissatisying.

onto sound quailty, i dont know the science of the matter, but i know vinyl sounds bettter man. i listen to music for approximately 10-12 hours a day, i go clubbing 4 times a week, i spend hours of my life each week in front of the subclubs 200,000 pound finely tuned(by ritchie hawtin, interestingly) martin audio sound system, and not only can you immediately hear how much practice someone has had with good sound system the moment a dj starts, you can tell wether a tune is on vinyl within about 2 seconds flat, or basically as soon as the bass comes in.

you can blab science at me all you want but you are just straight up wrong, perfect digital quality still sounds fantastic, but vinyl just sounds lush as fuck.

thirdly, a vinyl collection is the most beautiful and personal thing a music fan can possibly own. a computer full of high quality mp3's is good and all, but does it look cool? does it say, ive dedcicated my entire life to the pursuit of fantastic music, and its got me a wall full of cool as fuck records that will last forever?

so yeah basically, as a passionate electronic music lover i find your views kind of sad and miserable.

and as for the enviroment, who fuckin cares? how about we stop destroying entire country sized forests before we stop pressing vinyl.

Think you've nailed the main point of owning vinyl records (in this modern day) there.

If you have the money or already have the vinyl collection, I dont see why not DJ vinyl. But for anyone starting now it would be ridiculous to DJ vinyl. Cost you and arm and a leg and a liver and one lung. To have a good collection that is.
