This was just when Mogwai started. We were interested in a lot of American rock bands like Sonic Youth and Slint, as well as 70s guitar bands like the Stooges and Television. But when I look through the records that came out in 1996, the one that had a massive effect was Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin. When I heard "Girl/Boy Song", I stepped back and said, "What the fuck was that?" It was really beautiful but really demented.

 

Not long after that, we were doing an interview with Richard for the NME in a London pub-- I think it was something dumb for the Christmas issue to be honest. It was probably the worst conversation about music ever [laughs]. We were pretty drunk. In the 90s, you had to get drunk to enjoy all the Britpop. Richard got sick on my shoes as well-- I'd like to say it was an honor, but I was probably too drunk to think anything of it.

Yeah I remember this. Issue of the NME years ago (when it had some sort of street cred) and there was some feature with a load of band members going on a pub crawl round London lol. It had the geezer from Arab Strap too (I think). This was the exact time I started to get into Aphex.

If I remember correctly Richard had an orange, puffa body warmer on and there was various photo's of them in various states of disrepair!

What the fuck the feature was supposed to be about, I have no idea. Seemed sort of pointless but fun.

Shows how complete and utter shit the NME is nowadays.
