yes that is literally what you said. you said that since it seems that some parents don't teach this, that the schools should step in and teach it.

haha but again i didn't say that either, you're putting words in my mouth for the 2nd time in this thread. you are using the term 'literally' a tad liberally here

i didn't say i don't think parents should teach teach this stuff (i absolutely think they should be involved in instilling these values as much as humanly possible), i said the schools should teach it too to some extent. How is that having the state be the 'parents' any more than sex education or a multitude of other forms of education given in schools

why don't they teach a class in elementary school on having compassion for your fellow human being? trying to at least put in place a foundation for empathy and understanding at an early age. It seems like this is a very low priority and mostly left to parents

"seems like this is a very low priority, and mostly left to parents" after having said "why don't they teach a class in elementary school on having compassion for your fellow human being?"

how i read that was you basically saying what is "mostly left to the parents" isn't good enough and that the system should step in.

parents don't own their children as much as some control freaks would like to. school is supposed to expose kids to other points of view. that's part of what a good education is. and ethics is a perfectly valid subject to discuss in school.

personally i'm very fucking happy i had a public education or otherwise all i would have seen of the world growing up would have been a bunch of puritanical, evangelical jeebus fanatics.

i hate to sound like a complete hippy fag, but why don't they teach a class in elementary school on having compassion for your fellow human being? trying to at least put in place a foundation for empathy and understanding at an early age. It seems like this is a very low priority and mostly left to parents, when in fact most of these types of conflicts occur on school grounds.

You've raised an excellent point here - don't give it the nonsensical, culturally defined label "hippy fag" - it is a solution which makes sense regardless of the semantic labels involved. Yes, education is key from an early age to prevent bullying, and empathy should be reinforced.

They did this in my primary school. I'm not in any way a defender of religious education, but in my earliest years only the most benevolent bits of Jesus' philosophy was taught to us. Didn't work. The natural reaction in that situation would be to kick the bully's ass, which is why so many people seem to identify with the bullied kid. The problem arises when the bullied person is unable/ afraid to react- which is the usual case. The chubby boy was obviously bigger and stronger but it took what obviously looks like an extended period of abuse for him to finally snap, and even when he's just flattened the little prick you can still sense that he's incredibly scared.

Anyway, there isn't really a solution to the problem other than doing what that kid did. Unfortunately most bullied kids won't have such a physical advantage.

so now that were getting off on some strange tangent here, do you also think sex education should be entirely left to the parents?

i don't think it's good enough, i made that clear, but you inferred several other distorted and false points from my post. How does me saying 'its not good enough' mean that the state should become the 'parents' thats an unhelpful gross generalization

you seem to have a black and white view of the role of state education VS parenting

yes but some countries schools have a very...lets say 'biased' view.

slippery slopes.

before you edit your post, is that really your only response to what i said?

Edit: specifically you chose not to answer my question about sex education, it wasn't designed to trap you i'm just curious if you have this view on bullying then surely you don't think it should stop there

typically when i hear the argument about parents not wanting the 'state' to raise the child they are angry that kids are being taught about subjects like safe sex in schools, or anything that offends the puritans.

you could pull a godwin here and say yes the school could be indoctrinating kids into a particular horrifying mindset for example, but that's a highly subjective point of view.

it's a slippery slope in either direction. let kids be exposed to different views at least they have a chance of making up their own minds.

fair enough, i would prefer a more in depth response, but if thats all you got i can live with it

edit: and i wasn't calling you out for editing your post, i do that shit all the time i just meant like right now can you please explain yourself a little better, what you said implies you also disagree with other existing subjects taught from state sponsored education

I'm pretty sure the tl;dr version of what Awepittance has been saying is, "Would you like to go out some time?"

Fuck, I just way too much time reading this entire thread, but I must say watmms is fantastic for slightly heated forum debates. Good discussions guys, keep it up. I'd participate but I feel like anything I'd contribute has already been mentioned concisely enough by someone else.

how is it mutli-leveled ? Online bullying? Im old, so i dont know...I wish i beat my bullies up in school. It does bother you forever

ahh, the intellectual speaks

I don't care if its a bully or Steve Erwin, I just love seeing someone get payback when they provoke someone else for no reason other then their own enjoyment. Its like watching karma unravel real-time.

Slightly OT, but somewhat relevant to sex ed:

About a year ago, my roommate was court ordered to do some drug classes by the state, for getting a DUI. Apparently, the topic of birth control came up, and the instructor asked, "How many of you males put earwax on your finger and put it in the vagina after sex to prevent pregnancy?". About 3/4 of the class raised their hand, no lie.

I suppose I should note that my roomie was the only white person there, so this may be culture specific. Apparently the teacher called the people that raised their hands "nasty motherfuckers".
