I love all the old stuff. The Artificial Intelligence tracks Crystel, The Egg and Chatter get regular airings at full blast.

And I don't like it when the word cheese and Autechre are used in the same sentence. So please don't do it

you honestly couldn't be more wrong. Personally i enjoy Incunabula much more than Amber or even Lp5,

I really like Incunabula... I might even prefer it over Amber...

It's cheese, but it's a decent brie at least.

My quick, low-information assessment:

Other Autechre > Lego Feet > Incunabula/Amber

The Egg > Eggshell

Incunabula would be clearly > Amber, were it not for teartear

yeah. It really is a great album. hot humid nights of indian summer for me.

There's a lot more going on in it that many care to point out. And I imagine in 93 this was quite the forward looking record that kids bored with techno would have wanted.

Yeah but once you get to the Confield/Draft/Untilted era, you find a lot of intricate detail and generative techniques that are completely absent from Incunabula, not to mention flawless sound design.

yeah but you'd be ignoring all the albums in between incunabula and confield. I think it's safe to say Incunabula is a very good album for it's time, far more accomplished and less dated sounding than 95% of other 'idm' from the time

444 is a song I wanna play at my wedding if I ever got married. If by some miracle I found a woman who understood why (neeeeeeever gonna happen).

be careful what you wish for, you don't want to end with a wedding video that has a short section where you're inexplicably the only person busting some moves during the reception to basscadet. trust me on this.

as for Incunabula. i reckon it's pretty excellent. because of how they evolved as a band i find it really just depends on what mood i'm in. Incunabula works by pressing the lush buttons.

You're expecting generative techniques on Ae's very first album released in 1993? Wtf.

quite right

they prob havnt even heard of max/msp then

Actually, Bike is a reference to Cycling '74 and is a fully generative composition.

Well I kind of lack the context cause I was only a wee lad when all of their stuff came out, so I am seeing it all simeultaneoulsy (no doubt a typo lol).

But yeah, I guess when you put it in terms of 1993, its pretty out there. A couple great soungs but I still find it somewhat underwhelming, compared to Amber even (I love Amber though, was my first autechre ^_^)

Incunabula and Bytes absolutely shit all over the rest of the Artificial Intelligence series.

In my humble opinion.

This is the problem I have when people underrate Incunabula, they usually compare it to their later work instead of comparing it in context. There was no eye-dee-emm in 1993, they could not have done something like Confield or Draft or whatever back then.

Personally I have a hard enough time comparing albums within the same era because this Ae, nigga! they change it up every time.

Of course I wouldn't expect an album from 1993 to have generative techniques, lol. Let me summarize what I'm trying to say:

  • Compared to other music at the time, Incunabula is extremely good.
  • Compared to the rest of Ae's catalogue, Incunabula isn't as good, and it's underrated as a result.

It's really good. Though some of the sounds on it are a bit dated, the compositions aren't. I think I like it better than Amber, too. Hard to compare it to others.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Every single album from the Artificial Intelligence are equally good. But if i had to choose I one would choose Surfing on Sine waves (obviously)

I miss that era of braindance :(, much better than what follow.

It is a great album! How can Incunabula be compared to Autechre's later music anyway? Incunabula was released in another era long before most you kids were born. Played during the small hours coming down after a drug fuelled night in the early 90's... perfect.

Folks keep saying that 'most' of watmm was born after Incunabula, but that... that can't actually be demographically correct, can it?

In any case, I think Incunabula sounds pretty good for being performed entirely on upright player piano.
