I normally find cult leaders and cults in general pretty fascinating, and maybe it was the way in which it's presented, but there didn't seem to be much in the way of backstory or even half baked philosophy behind any of it, just a karen who likes to drink and be the center of attention and a small flock of heads glorifying her slow mo trainwreck. If anything Mike was the one who saw the writing on the wall and skipped town before shit hit the fan. A dick move to grab the cash, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same in his place. I felt sorry for the old lady, she just seemed to be in her own world most of the time just chillin, i wonder if she's still with them.

yeah watched 2/3 of this so far, probably will finish it but overall quite boring. I feel like half the people on the doc are faking "believing" in anything just to avoid any kind of punishment.

I love Werner Herzog's documentaries, due for a re-watch of those. This moment with the deranged penguin from Encounters at the End of the World is one of my favorite moments from those.

Yeah that's a classic. I watched that documentary years and years ago, and that scene really put a hook in me.

He is the master of capturing incredible moments. One of my favorites Herzog moments is the deaf/blind man finding the tree in Land of Silence and Darkness. That movie is incredible.

This was pretty much people dunking on what a douchebag Bob Guccione was from start to finish, even from his own kids. The only real empathy for the guy came from models & porn stars that got their start in Penthouse, and the few Village Voice free speech type journalists who championed him. He did try to help rid America of its Victorian era sex shame complex, as did Larry Flynt. A lot of similarities to Trump.

Oh many this movie. One of the best of all time. I have seen it twice and both times it made me weep.

2 episode into this, it’s creepy and has almost a witch house vibe to it, the sister on the right is the one stuck in the dance cult. There is some good insight into the early years of TikTok, how many monetized scenes started to develop, communities of scammers and this fake “Reverend”.

A lot of Andrew McCarthy complaining, some of the other actors talk to him, most tell him to let his grudge go, but it seems to have defined him for a lot of his life now.

    Quote

Fictional scientist Dr. Nils Hellstrom guides viewers throughout the film. He claims, on the basis of scientific-sounding theories, that insects will ultimately win the fight for survival on Earth because of their adaptability and ability to reproduce rapidly and that the human race will lose the fight largely because of excessive individualism. The film combines short clips from horror and science fiction movies with extraordinary camera sequences of butterflies, locusts, wasps, termites, ants, mayflies, other insects rarely seen before on film and insectivorous plants/insects.[5]

this was a docu I was looking for a few years ago but never managed to find it anywhere, then the other day it suddenly crops up on youtube, didn´t realize it was the same one until halfway through lol. Loved it. It´s like a 1990s Louis Theroux episode meets a Tom Waits song. And that soft, matte look o´ the times which is so easy on the eyes.

Pretty well done, in layman’s terms (thankfully), most of the major players from the Genesis era are interviewed, and exploring the lengths Nakamoto went to, to prevent themselves from ever withdrawing the funds in the Genesis block from the chain, as well as how Silk Road basically paved the way for the modern crypto model as we know it. Burned their ships at the shore.

Recently chugged down a few more True Crime docs.

If you are familiar with the history of the case, this one is a must-watch. (Not exactly a spoiler as it is pretty much common knowledge that zodiac was never caught) It lays the case out quite convincingly for the primary suspect who was never charged with any of the crimes. It’s pretty infuriating that this guy had so many connections yet police were unable to prosecute him. Anyway, solid watch.

This one was a real roller coaster. I probably shouldn’t say much about it. Just watch it.

I have an unhealthy and inexplicable addiction to murder podcasts.  Every night I fall asleep hearing about the worst people doing the worst things imaginable.  I have no idea why I do this, but it seems to be a fairly common affliction.  Good docs are actually quite hard to come by, so I appreciate the rec.  The best murder podcast I've come across in my years of consuming them is Root of Evil, which is about one of the prime suspects in the unsolved Black Dahlia murder case, George Hodel.  It's incredibly well researched and contains extensive interviews with family members.  Thoroughly engrossing.

Last Podcast on the Left is the one I fall asleep to most often.  The hosts are equal parts obnoxious, hilarious, and knowledgable.
