Hello friends,

My name is Taylor Johnson and I attend school in San Francisco. Currently I'm a "B.E.C.A." major, but I consider myself to be studying audio production. Our school has us take a research course which requires us to write a research paper on any subject relevant to popular media. My passion happens to lie with experimental electronica and I have noticed a hefty increase in the amount of “electronica-style” production involved in today's pop music. For this research paper I need to collect a fair amount of opinions and facts and with your help I can accomplish this.

My research topic/question: How has electronic production and music affected and influenced popular media?

First I will be asking you questions based on my research topic:

1. How many hours do you spend consuming music produced electronically? This can be music that isn’t necessarily branded as electronic, but is heavily processed like electronic music.

2. Can you give a rough estimate on how many times a day you hear electronically produced music in advertisements? If so, how many times?

3. How often do you find yourself in a club environment listening to electronic music? If so, is the music what you come to the club for?

4. Are you a musician or audio technician? If so, how often do you find yourself using electronic effect processing that isn’t for mastering purposes? If not, do electronic effects make a difference in your taste of music?

Another topic I would like to discuss in my paper is the current format war we are witnessing between compressed MP3’s and CD/WAV/FLAC formats.

5. Do you prefer CD or MP3? Do you prefer having better sound quality or more disk space to hold music?

6. What is the percentage of compressed MP3’s that you have in your music player/computer?

a. 1-25%

b. 26-50%

c. 51-75%

d. 76-99%

7. Can you give me a rough percentage of the amount of electronic music in your music library?

a. 1-25%

b. 26-50%

c. 51-75%

d. 76-99%

8. Which part of the world are you currently living in?

9. Are you male or female?

10. Are you over 21?

not a lot. except pretty much everything these days is electronic music if you think about it. "electronic music" is too general and 'all-encompassing' a term anyway, and not near elitist or secular or underground or cool or ubergeeky enough! ;)

i've pretty much always called it electronica, for more than 10 years. and i haven't ripped a bong in even longer. but i do like France quite a lot.
