Oversteps

So how are people feeling about this album a year+ down the line?

well i understand it better. it's nice... pertty, but want something more move of ten now.

Still loving it. Needing something mega epic cock slapping like a triple disc anoose explosion. Now.

Oversteps was refreshing when it came out, but Move of Ten really did it for me.

Both are pretty solid releases, but I tend to consider Oversteps the stepping stone to the glory that is MoT.

no ae has connected with me like ilanders.

despite being initially pretty impressed, the recent album and ep haven't aged as well the rest of their work. kinda feel like it's worn thin for me.

yuuuuup i take that back regarding move of ten... just gave it another listen -- a lot of great tracks. oversteps definitely wore out for me, though.

Really? I'm surprised, I like Oversteps way more than Move of Ten. Oversteps feels like a massive, cohesive work of art. Move of Ten sounds mostly like funky little outtakes to me. Don't get me wrong, I love MoT, but some parts of Oversteps just really hit me hard. Treale is one of the most epic pieces of music I've ever heard.

the more noodly tracks are now really great to me. st epreoo into redfall is great

not sure if mot is still better. they're like apples and clementines, the latter being mot of course

Is struggle to get through the whole thing at once, I think it could be 3 or 4 tracks shorter. But I still really like it, and to be honest I'd find it difficult to cull it back (even if I did, I'd probably end up listening to the leftovers as well, but not in the same sitting).

It's a shame cos I love the last track but I struggle to get all the way up to it.

absolutely adore oversteps. definitely among my favourites of theirs.

Treale and known(1) really hooked me to this release. The last minutes or so of treale are some of the most beautiful autechre imo

Move of Ten BTW... I've only listened to it like... 3 times. Definitely didn't get into that one much. Some cool bits but none of it excites me that much.

Haven't heard Move Of Ten yet, but I got the CD since September. Apparently that's how much Oversteps put me off. The whole album makes me think of a man in baroque clothing shitting on a banquet table.

I love it. Was my favorite since Confield when it came out, in my top 3 AE albums now. Not every track is a standout but I love the theme and it just works so damn well as an album. It's gorgeous and takes you to another realm like the AE of old (not that I dislike the new stuff).

Move Of Ten was great too, two of their strongest releases in ages in my opinion. They lost me a bit from Draft - Quaristice. There were great tracks sure but none of them won me over as cohesive albums.

I like it. second half is interesting but not essential, I agree with the comment that it could be a shorter, more punchy album. Despite it having a very fresh and interesting sound, I'm not sure it's essential ae. But I did feel they were stagnating on Untilted and Quaristice so it was good to see them make the leap. Also, being in my late 30's now, I appreciate that it's a more mellow album (/oldman)

i've been liking oversteps and MoT more than ever actually

still got Oversteps in regular rotation. great album to listen to on the way home from work at the end of the day. this album is a big step forward for Autechre, soundwise. hate to use the m word, but yeah... it's a very 'mature' sounding album. not one of my favorites by them but still a solid release.

there are 3 standout tracks on here: pt2ph8, os_veix3, & the amazing krYlon. those are the essense of the Oversteps vibe for me. d-sho_qub gets honorable mention for being a lot of fun.

the album artwork still sucks, tho.

Funny, draft is actually my favourite of the post-2000 era, I also like Untilted very much. Quaristice, so-so. Not bad but it always makes me feel a little like they were just putting out a bunch of tracks by merely applying the "autechre-formula". Not much innovation regarding the leaps they took between other albums, and that there was a three years gap.

I guess Oversteps ties in with the "other kind of autechre" that most people love and that is somehow beyond me - I also never got into LP5 and ep7 But I love Envane, Cichlisuite, Tri Rep, their various remixes and all that. I'm not just after the complex jumpy stuff, I actually like ambient music a lot in general. It's just I can't shake the feeling of a huge amount of cheesiness when I listen to Oversteps.

The tracks I like best are Treale, os veix3, d-sho qub, Yuop.

The specific track I had in mind here was see on see, right from the start. gives it a sort of a "let's celebrate the tragedy" -vibe.

I'm being a bit over the top, I don't HATE the album, I just don't like it as much as other work and was a little disappointed. Although the tracks I listed as my favs are actually quite good imo.

Oversteps is still getting loads of listens here, it's a great album. Funny, I remember hearing the last 3 tracks thinking 'what is this noodly bullshit?' 1st time round, now that sequence of redfall -> yuop is probably one of my favourite bits of autechre. Often the way.

Strangely, I'm not particularly into Move Of 10, some good tracks but doesn't really hold together for me - plus, i find those out of tune flutes on nth dafuseder actually unlistenable for some reason, had to cut that track in the end. I expect to be claiming that it's the best thing they've ever recorded in about 6 months time.

i really really like oversteps. i mean, O=0 is just so incredibly gorgeous. the whole album is has all sorts gorgeousness.

All right, listening to this again today, it is a fantastic album, though I still think it could have been trimmed down. I think I'd be fine trimming known(1), d-sho qub, st epreo, and Yuop. Known(1) and s-sho qub are similarly tongue-in-cheek experiments, but as intriguing and/or funny as they are, I find they kind of ruin the vibe. St epreo is fine but nothing special, and Yuop is just too threadbare, I can tell they're going for epic but it's no Drane 2. That said -

r ess is among the best tracks they've done, gorgeous opener

qplay is another of their best tracks, probably my favorite on the album, the "talking synths" at the end and melancholy vibe remind me of Rae. Truly amazing track.

Treale is also great, I think a bit overrated, but there's that bit from 0:43-1:04 that is pure bliss

See on See is almost too pretty, it's actually a bit awkward as to me it sounds too fast, the lushness doesn't have time to envelop you, but that's characteristic of the album.

ilanders, pt2ph8, osveix3, 0=0, and krYlon are all lovely as well. So yeah, groovy album.

I know I stupidly whinged about it on here, but Oversteps has turned into my favorite Ae record (and I am a fan of their most 'extreme' stuff.) I don't know any record that sounds like it, yet it sounds like a record that's always existed.

Move of Ten I don't like so much. It's a bit more jammy and doesn't seem as deep as Oversteps to me. But neither is it as fun. I don't know... for some reason it never clicked like Oversteps did.
