yes. creating is about making something new. We all get influenced but i would find it stressful cause you can never be as good as the original. Be an original

a couple times, mr. aphex stated he wasn't going to release his best stuff because other people would just rip him off.

i always said to myself: well, mr. aphex, you might have to just come up with some new stuff then....

i'm trying to work to this kind of ethos atm but am definitely guilty of purposefully trying to sound like afx in the past...but it's all about originality I agree - trouble is, the new stuff afx comes up with is just so damn good I want to hear more of the same so try and make my own to fulfil my cravings...

Be like deriding someone for making a nice cake, by using a recipe they got from a 3 star michelin restaurant. Or anyone that plays the blues or country or bluegrass or the whole of classical music.

- i'm too woken up shellshocked to make a decent defence of something that i'm not that committed to fighting. It's odd, before i woke up i was defending a large building from a rifleman's position, and had just been given the opportunity to sleep. When i awoke.

bit harsh... lol, but no it doesn't make it better, just trying to explain my particular reasoning.

i think musical trends come and go. Everyone was into laptops in the late 90's. Inspiration is what it's called I guess. Let's listen to the stuff that influences our favorite artists. Instead of being directly controlled by whoever is at the end of the supply chain.

that's only one step removed from imitating them -- imitating their path instead.

you want ideas from everywhere. why not listen to all sorts of weird music? maybe even read a book?

I've heard on some italo tracks, what would be thought of as aphex clichés. Personally i don't give a fuck where it's from as long as my mind perceives it as good music.

As to slavish copies. You can tell the difference between an artist using a learned technique, and a low level draughtsman. Then again, yes you can codify these things given enough analysis and the things codified are getting ever more complex. But it's too depressing to think about machines removing valid money making opportunities from musicians.
