Is there another album in this world anything like SAW 85-92?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for the longest time only to come up short. If Richard is good at one thing, it's having a new sound for each release... Too bad he hasn't made anything like this one.

So I'm basically looking for other artists with something similar-ish to it... For me SAW 85-92 is the only album with the true essence of ambient techno, and I'd love to be proven wrong.

Hmm one similar album would be hard to find I don't know any tbh, you'll rather find some tracks over here and there amongst interresting or not albums.

You'll find some on Seefeel's Quique (Imperial especially), Locust's In rememberance of times past (and check some early Appolo releases, Tournesol has some good things), Cultural Vibes' ma foom bay, some µ-Ziq on bluff limbo & tango n vectif (and so early rephlex stuff of course).

It depends a bit if you're more into Actium or Hedphelym in fact.

That's what comes to mind at the moment I'll check for some other things later

Thank you for all the replies so far! This is just what I needed :emotawesomepm9:

Plastikman - Consumed sounds kinda like Xtal, but that album as a whole is kinda boring... I wish there were more tracks similar to just Consumed/Xtal...

"90" by 808 State is the closest relative I can think of, and easily the biggest influence on the sound of SAW 85-92. Not the expanded "Utd. State" US version but the original.

Aside from that maybe try B12 "Electro Soma", the Redcell/Stasis CD, Joey Beltram "Aonox", Locust "Weathered Well", Likemind Records 1 to 4, specifically tracks by Nuron.

Speedy J's De-Orbit, you won't be disappoint by this one, and some tracks on Ginger

Mr Fingers' Can you feel it

GTO's Pure (beautiful mix), lovely

Neutron 9000 cybersculpture + another track on the album which exactly has the same 3 notes than Pulsewidth (released in 1990, before or after ?)

808 state 90 some tracks indeed

and the epic ambient piece which surpasses everything said here, Thera by X-103 (Mills & Hood)

everyone has pretty much stated all the good ones I can think of immediately off the top of my head

I really REALLY 2nd Susumu Yokota's album "Sakura"

that album relaxes me in a similar manner to 85-92, just slightly different style of music I guess :)

Some early ambient techno classics are reminiscent of SAW85-92 to some extent:

Biosphere - Microgravity

Biosphere - Patashnik

Gas - Gas 0095

B12 - TimeTourist

Move D - Kunststoff

Troll

U.F.Orb - The Orb

Howie B

Tangerine Dream - Rain Forest (from Sorcerer film soundtrack)

Future Sound of London - Papa New Guinea

Simon Posford - Sphongle and Hallucinogen.

Not too sure really hard to get something on the pulse of that particular record.

It's already been said, but B12 needs some more love

They released 7x double disk anthology of everything they've done under every alias, loads of good old stuff in there.

There are a few nice ambient techno albums, most of which have already been mentioned. Biosphere's Microgravity is as close as I've heard to Selected Ambient Works 85-92, and it's great, but it's just not as dreamy and out there. Other albums which you may like but aren't really the same include Incunabula, Electro-Soma, Earth and Nightfall, Substrata, Soup, Dimension Intrusion, 76:14, From Within, Dreamfish and Phonehead. There are lots more albums I'd recommend, but they're really nothing like Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

The closest I've heard to someone else sounding like Aphex Twin is probably Bochum Welt's album Kissing a Robot Goodbye, but it sounds more like, say, ...I Care Because You Do.

Of course, many of us are heavily influenced by Aphex Twin, and have a similar love for those kinds of sounds. I'm spending several albums just trying to make something as nice as any given Aphex Twin album. I'm getting a lot closer to Selected Ambient Works 85-92's sound with my latest album, City Lights, but it's a good few months from being finished. Why not grab some TR-808 samples, a simple synthesiser of your choosing, and a decent reverb and delay unit and make your own music influenced by this album? I'd love to hear the results.
