the time i saw them opening for the Cure the singer just rolled about the stage a lot occasionally getting up to shout. I could be old, but I didn't enjoy it. Coincidentally, I was round visiting my broher-in-law the other week and my 4 year old niece put on a similar performance. I didn't enjoy that either, but as I say, I could be old.

hipsters don't dance. they groom.

This is not entirely true. When I went to see Captain Ahab play last month, and the crowd consisted of a raver and a "true fan" who had followed them from their last show, a bunch of hipsters of the absolute worst degree, and me and my girl. The second he started, everyone in that room except the "true fan" (who just stood there and nodded the entire time) danced as hard as they fucking could until the music was over. Even the guy with the mullet, mustache and cat sweater.

I like Crystal Castles... and BTW, they don't rip of Nintendo chiptunes... think a lot older (they have a synth with an Atari 5200 soundchip in it supposedly), not to mention what video game they're named after.

i think the reference was to this, rather than ripping off actual nintendo music:

"In one of [their] earliest, unreleased demos, [they] incorporated a sample without permission; the track was uploaded on the MySpace page of the label, Lies Records, without credit to the original sampled song. The track, "Insectica (CC vs Lo-Bat Version)", uses clips chopped out of a song by Lo-bat called "My Little Droid Needs a Hand", released under a Creative Commons license. Another track called "Love and Caring", samples the kick and snare from Covox's "Sunday"."

- wiki

it goes far beyond that too, they've angered a bunch of chip tune composers in the community, they are in fact notorious for being thieves and not giving credit to who they sample.

not nintendo, but c64 and other stuff ill find the youtube video that exposes them for being thieves in a little bit....

They aren't even really playing live. I promoted a show of them some months ago and they used a Akai HD recorder for playing 8 (how much more consists their music off?) tracks pre-arranged from HD with just some crying of that silly poor girl on top of it.

I went with a friend to see them live a few months back at First Ave, in Minneapolis, and I'm no hipster by any means but I gotta say, I quite enjoyed the show. First Ave has a great soundcrew so it all sounded pretty damn good. Sure Alice isn't a great singer but she came out with tons of energy (despite having a broken ankle even). The atmosphere was great, tons of energy given off from the band and the crowd. The light show was pretty cool. I'll be the first to admit they aren't even the greatest chiptune or electro group, but for what they do they do it pretty well. It was a fun show.

nope

"That's a misquote. I was asked about my current experiments and I said I was trying to "fit" an Atari chip into a keyboard. It was impossible. Those ancient Atari systems used a special chip. A Pokie chip. There's pins on the chips that fit into the Atari system and naturally don't fit into the slots of a synth. At the time of the interview, I was trying to build a bridge between the Pokie chip and the slots in my synth. They must have assumed I had later successfully built the bridge. I didn't."

alice is hot tho

First person to answer this question gets a pair of passes to a show this Monday thru next Sunday (please send your answer to weeklyanswer@rickshawstop.com): Name two songs that Paul Simon wrote about a girlfriend of his that he had before he got married.

Last week's answer: The Texas controversy that Neon Indian's main dude was embroiled in a few years back was a contentious show with Crystal Castles, in which he was accused of stealing a pedal and they kicked him off the tour.

WATMM really is full of old boring men. Their show is entertaining and that's all that should matter.

(altho I could have just seen them rare good days)

You wouldn't go to a hardcore show and expect them to sound like they do on record.

Every time I've seen Slayer, they're just as good live as they are on record.

they did play with a live drummer on the set i saw, though, so there were at least two individuals on stage playing something.

hearing the name "crystal castles" just makes me think of shallow hipsters on too much ecstasy.

after reading about that trevor brown scandal i've decided to hate them and never listen to any of their music.

(i actually did hear them once through a friend's friend, and remember being bored and annoyed)
