I've cropped my 'friends' list to be just people I actually know or need to know, and it's become more tolerable... but I'd much rather interact in person.

How did you do it? I have these people from the past that never comment on anything or so they are just there because I did add them years ago and knew them from even longer ago. hmmm...

If I haven't spoken to you in two years, I'd say I have no reason to have you on Facebook... so I use the magical 'delete' button.

It complicates things with some family, who apparently get offended when I delete them, but I don't even speak to half of them so why they give a toss is beyond me.

thats a good point

Yeah, I worked a similar way. I deleted all the old school friends who I added years ago just to look at, but would never actually say more than 5 words to in real-life.

Then I deleted all the random meetings and friends-of-friends who I didn't really care for in the first place and wouldn't want to fuck. It's tough to make it final that you are never going to fuck this person, but really, you were delusional anyway.

Then I took out family members. You have to be fair and cull everyone within a certain parameter. I had a problem in that most of them spend a lot of time in the same houses so I had to get rid of them all to stop them snooping from other accounts.

Once you're done, just sit back and enjoy your steamlined sociality. The people that were geniunely interested in you, but maybe never had the courage to comment, will add you back if they really want to. They might deserve your approval. But the others that never bother probably never read you anyway and will never bring it up even if they noticed.

You might get new friends and random old acquantainces adding you still. But now you can feel justified in denying people out-right and categorising groups of friends in importance.

Fuck, man. Sociopathy.

fucking right on the money.

i'd buy that for a dollar.

before I deleted my facebook account - a strange process, to be sure - I updated my status with my email address alerting people that if they wanted to get a hold of me, that was the way to do it.

no one contacted me during the two weeks that facebook was pending my attempt to delete the account, but I learned later that a few of my 'friends' were grossly offended that I had dropped contact with them without warning and they thought I must be mad about something - yet I learned all this through mutual friends. never once was I contacted by anyone who claimed to be offended.

i did a similar thing. posted more than once that i was deleting my Facebook by a finite time period, and that if anyone wanted to keep in touch that they should ask for my details. only one person did.

i've deleted and restarted mine about 5 times

I always assumed Facebook would sort of just be 'here to stay' unlike myspace. maybe I was wrong. it's hard to imagine this website really dying off like that though, but surprisingly it seems possible. we're really working on a new frontier here. it's weird.

i really don't like facebook. the only thing keeping me on there is the 90% of friends i have that would have no way of contacting me if i were to delete my account.

i do like getting invited to wicked parties and events on facebook since most of the time people won't invite me in person.

Yeah, if it weren't for Bacefook, I wouldn't get invited to anything, but I guess it is the easiest way to send out invitations. Especially surprise parties.

I made it so nobody can post on my wall (hardly anyone did anyway) and I don't post anything on people's walls, comment on anything, "like" anything, etc. I guess I'm not really interested in stalking people anymore either, heh. I'm very close to deleting my account. But my social life is pretty stagnant in these post-college days anyways. Time to move across the country and start a fresh life, but that's another story.

i find it incredibly disturbing that your profile remains stored even if you delete your account. that shit should be gone for good if i want it to be.

do everything backwards. start deleting photos, tags, interests, links, friends, soon you will be on the beginning again. then, deactivate.

that doesn't work. the information is still there. you cannot delete anything from Facebook.

don't believe me?

right click on a picture you're going to delete, save the URL in a text file somewhere, then delete the picture. hell, even delete your Facebook account.

come back 6 months later and try that URL you saved. i bet you still have access to your picture.

I've never had a Facebook account. I deleted my myspace profile around 04/05 and never looked back. I lost touch with some people from high school for a reason. and I've kept in touch with others for the opposite reason. it's not hard to keep up with good friends.
