I don't understand how anyone could be so stupid as to start up this sort of conversation/ranting match on an easily accessible platform. Surely a lot of what is talked about could come back and bite you in the ass.

I quit a couple of months ago and haven't looked back. I didn't even download my files or warn anyone, just deleted my account on a whim one day. I had come to the realization that time is valuable, that I wanna spend it in doing real stuff, and that Facebook had no substance whatsoever. Add to that the fact that Facebook must be the biggest fucking database in human history by now - perfect for surveillance, etc. I don't want a private American company to harvest all that info about me.

the endless promotion of bands on facebook is insane and kinda opened me to the realization of why most music is so boring. you have mediocre artists supporting other mediocre artists simply because they're being supported, not because they're actually good but because of mutual support. i actually had a case where a friend truly liked my music and then took it away because i didn't support his band, which i didn't like. i can't see liking stuff i don't like just because i know them.. unless the word like has taken a new meaning - but only on facebook. fucking stupid.

I got into Facebook late. I was aware of its security/privacy problems but I never took the bait. Plus there wasen't a media player built into artist pages like myspace.

I signed up for Facebook in the beginning of Feb with as little personal details as I could with my spam (hotmail) email address. I was surprised that even though I did not give them any permission to look at my hotmail address book, it immediatly suggested a bunch of ex girlfriends and class mates to me that I knew based on my email address. You can google search this email address and come up with nothing. Facebook is definitely doing something sneaky behind the scenes with hotmail.

Either way I only made friends with about 10 people so they could keep track of my progress with an album I was writing. This didn't last long before I was bombarded with optional app installs, spam, "poking", friend suggestions, it was like the world was doing everything I could to open up my computer to Facebook. Denying all these things is actually pretty tough work for a new user. I have no clue how non-computer people can pull it off.

Its only been about 4 months and I'm tired of Facebook. I check it out once a day to be DOS attacked by the same 2-3 people who feel the need to write something in Facebook every 30 seconds. If one of my friends did post something interesting or insightful, I'd never notice cuz I'm continually scrolling past comments some girl left in anger about her boyfriend that she can't tell him in person, or a goth friend of mine complaining about his job not being gothic enough.

You can assign pictures to your contacts by using the facebook app it then pulls your complete iPhone adressbook in exchange. This is how it got all the information about the email adress. It was on one of the girls phones or email contact lists

yeah, i think i was reminded too many times by facebook how shitty people were and that kind of drove me away

i am actually quite appalled that people use facebook this intimately/personally what the hell are they thinking?

I guess having friends that are vaguely thoughtful helps - I've had conversations about feminism, politics, economics, state of IT in North America vs. Asia, sports and so on. Now we could of course have these conversations via e-mail - but then other friends wouldn't be able to see and contribute if they were so inclined.

Of course there is bullshit posted from time to time, but that is the nature of social interaction. You don't think John Locke sat around all day thinking about liberty and private property exclusively do you? He hit the mead, chased tail and exchanged stories like any other person.

If all my friends lived in one place then yeah I guess I wouldn't have much need for facebook. Also, I've blocked applications from accessing my wall/profile - so I don't get any farmville/mafia wars spam. On the plus side, I've met people through friends who have similar interests (like inter-Korean relations, political economy of NE Asia, football (not hand-egg) and so on) and have had many thought provoking interactions. I rarely spend more than 30 minutes a day on facebook, far less time than I spend on here.

So for me, facebook presents no real issues - the privacy thing is something to stay on top of, but that is something one must do anyways, in the current climate.

Also, XXX if you could post more of that sort of stuff - lol it's like watching a train wreck conducted over facebook.

if someone used facebooks friend fiender (when u give them your password and they look in your email) then everyone who did that and you are on there book, they will know, they stored this information forver

so ur friends did that and at first u wernt on there but then u signed up and facebook knows whose email your in :shuriken:

I've cropped my 'friends' list to be just people I actually know or need to know, and it's become more tolerable... but I'd much rather interact in person.

How did you do it? I have these people from the past that never comment on anything or so they are just there because I did add them years ago and knew them from even longer ago. hmmm...

If I haven't spoken to you in two years, I'd say I have no reason to have you on Facebook... so I use the magical 'delete' button.

It complicates things with some family, who apparently get offended when I delete them, but I don't even speak to half of them so why they give a toss is beyond me.

cause it's serious fuckin business. :sparta:

it bothers me when people treat the friends list as the definitive factor of friendship status

and 479 friends? yea, get real.

I like how we all like to trim people. We are a passive agressive bunch. People fucking suck, but I keep about 175 on my FB account. Give or take. High school kids have shit loads of friends. Retirees never seem to have over 50. OUr worlds get smaller as we age. Maybe a good thing. Never got no pussy off facebook. How can this be done? People are weird about facebook. Offend easily. Ive ruined a few friendships on that site. Your online identity is not always you but some people like to think so. It takes a special skill to accurately match the real life you with your online you. Maybe Im wrong though and maybe I really am a cunt. :duckhunt:

I worked a similar way. I deleted all the old school friends who I added years ago just to look at, but would never actually say more than 5 words to in real-life.

this is the part i have a lot of trouble understanding. why do these people send me friend invites? i guess it could just be a kind gesture, but they don't say anything to you at all. the only people i'd really want on a friends list are the people i could easily hang with.

i find it incredibly disturbing that your profile remains stored even if you delete your account. that shit should be gone for good if i want it to be.

do everything backwards. start deleting photos, tags, interests, links, friends, soon you will be on the beginning again. then, deactivate.

just bullshit all your personal info.

i remember this facebook overhaul that happened a couple months ago. suddenly it put your photo album right at the top of your profile (including all tagged photos). Holy Moses i was pissed at fb that day. so many shitty photos of me taken by my family, the kind of stuff i would just rather not be visible to anyone.

There's a way of opting out of that top-bar of photos. Although, rather anally, I still maintain mine so I can only ever see the photos I like.

Everytime one of these threads pops up I feel like I should delete my account. I trim it down regularly and have got it pretty much wrapped up regarding my information and contactability, so why don't I just fucking do it and delete it?

I guess I like to idly get updates about my friends, post random funny shit I find to an audience, and use the easy contact-lists.

If they could just get rid of the profiles, likes and photos, I'd be much happier. But I guess that's Twitter, and not even a 1/4 of my friends use Twitter regularly, if at all.

i hide from cameras cause I know its going to get on facebook and I wont like it

I used to go out with some girl who'd like to show me pictures of her nights out. There was like 300 pictures.

1.Who are these people and why do I care?

2.Did you doing anything else that night but take pictures that night? How is that fun?

It lasted about a week or two.
