Yeah the fit board is great. When people think 4chan they think of /b/ which is where all the shit comes from (as well as a bunch of lols) but there's actually a bunch of good stuff on there.

it drives me fucking nuts how I am unable to gain muscle after working out for months. Either Im doing the exercises wrong, or my body's metabolism has improved significantly since Ive stopped drinking. Now I basically just stick to cardio, some pushups and crunches now and then.

I'm currently ending my first week of Stronglifts 5x5.

I've been working out for a while and built a physique that I'm fairly happy with, but I feel I'm lacking in strength. Upper rep ranges are fine, but I've always felt I've made my best gains when using heavier weights and lower reps, so I'm ditching the traditional '3x8 for muscle' approach and going heavy.

how often do you hit the gym? I go every other day and it makes significant difference

I need to get back on my P90x routine, but I've fixed my metabolism and diet enough where I don't gain weight if I don't workout.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

I was at my high point going 3-4 times a week, and then doing cardio on two days, then taking a day off of everything. Maybe I was just eating too much? Or maybe I just didn't notice the difference, though I can conclusively say I "felt" the difference..more upbeat, more energy, etc.

I started on this a few days ago:

http://hundredpushups.com/index.html

and the days Im not doing pushups Im doing 45-60 mins of low cardio (going to slowly make it more intense as I ease back into the routine)

I was really surprised at the results of my initial exhaustion test...35! I was hoping Id be lucky to get 20 in a row, much less 35. I think this is the plan I need, nothing insane, just very, very slow and easy buildup over time. If I can one day claim I can do 100 pushups in a row, I'll be feeling pretty damn proud.

I haven't been doing jack shit except riding my bike to and from work, 1.7 mi each way, most of which is on a hill. I'm trying to only eat protein in the morning and meat and veggies at lunch, sometimes skipping breakfast if I'm not hungry. I've lost about 4 pounds since starting that and gone from 250 to 245.5, which is cool, but I think I need to get more serious about diet and exercise to progress. Also I haven't changed my evening meals at all. My mood is definitely better although I'm pretty pooped after going up that hill, and the other cyclists are whizzing past me. But most importantly, the changes I've made are enjoyable, which makes me want to keep them up. I didn't have fun at the gym at all which made me stop going, so I've got to figure out some way to motivate myself to do weight training.

Not sure if helpful since you all seem to be more serious/fit than me but maybe there's another lonely fat WATMMer out there looking for some motivation.

Good idea. Historically I don't drink regularly, although I love beer. For some reason about a month ago, I started drinking a couple drinks every day. I ran out of gin and beer earlier this week and I haven't felt the need to replace them.

I also quit drinking coffee, although I drink PG Tips for a boost now. It kind of amazes me how sensitive I am to coffee now - I tried some on the weekend and I had bad heartburn and was bouncing off the walls.

Good advice.. Go hard at it then rest. And don't do lengthy cardio ever if you're trying to build muscle. I've been throwing hard sprints and tabata cycling intervals into my mix, powerlifting about every day or other day. I'm getting stronger really fast. My workout partner is too.. We're accumulating muscle mass really fast.

The 150 lb weighted punching bags I started practicing muai thai on are falling apart now.. the padding comes looseand my more powerful strikes just knock them over like bowling pins.. LOL

I like this.. been doing the same thing. I figure if I want to reach my goal of lifting the heaviest weight possible, I need to lift the heaviest weights I can at all times.. no exceptions. My limit is usually set low enough to maintain good form, but high enough to fucking hurt fatigue my muscles to failure after only a few reps..

wait, so how much cardio should I be doing then? 20 minutes or something? Is it burning too many calories? Thus sucking away all the built muscle?

just looked at the stronglifts 5x5 program - looks good. I think i'll give that a try when i go back to the gym in the fall.

Smetty - if you're trying to build muscle, don't do cardio.

this thread just shows that in order to stay in shape you have to educate yourself in whichever regimen you choose. The most important thing is to stay at it. 3-5 days a week, at least. you are wasting your time otherwise

The risk here is elevating cortisol peaks. They affect tissue development and protein synthesis.

Doing some active rest like a good cardio workout would probably be fine on days not lifting I think. The concern is that doing a lengthy cardio session on the same day you do resistance training has more potential to broadly elevate cortisol peaks. It probably varies from person to person like most things, but a lot of people wonder get into this situation and wonder why they're not improving anymore.

Personally I seperate the two, cardio/fun exercise days and days where I do my lifting, sprinting, and muai thai.

No, fiz, that's pretty sound advice. Pretty much any good exercise routine is going to have you doing cardio on rest/non-lifting days.

(i'm never going to a gym) yeah, it's true. a mate has some seriously heavy weights (50kg or more barbell) and i've increased muscle from occasionally taking the opportunity to lift them.. squats, benchpress, etc. my dumbells are edit: 7 kg and basically a waste of time to lift (at this point), other than some isolation stuff... although using those regularly + the occasional properly heavy stuff seems to be working.

I've lost fat really fast like 5 times by restricting carbs and running, I realize that my only problem is I would just stop working out after and go back to eating like shit. For most of the last 6 months I tried to just get in shape by working out like ka-ka-crazy and dropping all white trash carbs. Well I learned that when I don't carb restrict it takes way too long burn fat for me, I practically tripled my muscle strength and endurance, my anaerobic capacity is doubled or so, I'm pretty well in the best physical shape of my life, which is saying a lot, but losing fat is a different story. I started seeing my results streaming in quickly as soon as I started to go kind of paleo, getting most of my carbs from veggies and avoiding grains as much as the white trash. Going to keep paleo-ish for a long while as I know I'm hyper sensitive to carbs and see if I can keep my body fat extremely low for a long long while enjoying good fatty delicious food.
