Haha I got sucked into the Timbaland article on Wikipedia, and found this hilarious little bit:

  Quote
In June 2010, when questioned by RWD magazine about the UK music scene he made the bold claim to be the inspiration for the dub-step music scene. “The UK scene... they’re always telling me that I started it. You have Dub-bass...”. When questioned further about it he went on to say: "It’s funny cos they went back to some of my old music that really created that sound and just, instead of going fast, they went slow with more bass."

I don't listen to dubstep or whatever, but that's just hilarious to me.

When you do lots of cocaine, you have an inflated ego :)

Not really trying to defend Timbaland here, but this is kind of true. I don't have references at the moment, but I remember back in 2006 reading a few producers talk about how Timbaland was a big influence. For as shit as the plagiarism incident is, I think a lot of people forget how great the early Timbaland beats were.

I think tech step dnb was probably a larger influence since it's the same thing, except with more speed and less bass.

How about Scorn from 2000?

Hell even Scorn from '96

I'm not saying those old timbaland beats aren't good, cause they are, and he can be a great producer. But to claim he's the inspiration for dubstep? Come on now.

While I agree that he is overstepping his bounds by saying he invented it, I think his music (mostly his early shit) was clearly an influence on the production style in a lot of UKG t hat was a precursor to dubstep. I am trying to find the interviews I had read with producers mentioning it, but this was in 06, so good luck to me. Regardless, like I said before, his early beats were shit hot. He was obviously doing something much different than any one else at the time.

edit*

and while I agree that Scorn was doing the halftime bass heavy shit well before most people, I honestly get the impression that he was just not that well known, especially since dubstep originated out of what is more or less an r&b hybrid, and he was the drummer for Napalm Death, ffs. But yeah, he doesn't get enough respect.

Edited by thanks robert moses

this is pasted from wiki, lol. what a cunt.

On February 2, 2007, Timbaland responded to the plagiarism accusations in an interview by the radio show Elliot in the Morning. In this interview, Timbaland admits to what he calls "sampling", but he also claims that sampling is "not stealing", because "everybody samples from everybody every day". Timbaland also says that the sample is "from a video game" and mentions the Commodore 64. He also says that he has no time for research and that it is sometimes impossible to "know what's public domain and what's not". Timbaland also calls the issue "ridiculous" but mentions that he is "in legal discussions" and therefore can't say much about it. He did, however, call Janne Suni an "idiot" and a "freakin' jerk" on the show. He consistently talked about the incident as sampling, failing to address the claims with regards to the melody

How the fuck is it it cheating when the guy who wrote the song is using it in a different song? I'm not talking about timbaland here.

Agreed.

If I had made a track that was extremely popular on the internet but didn't get any air play on the radio which would cause me to lose a lot of royalty money I would - without a doubt - give the track to Beyoncé, tell her I wanted 50% of the royalties, and then perhaps even give her a little peck on the cheek.

I mean, it's okay to have standards and be artsy about one's music but if music production is your primary income then you would be an absolute fool to say 'no' to Beyoncé.

Beyoncé: 'Hey, do you want to make a million dollars by sending me the multitracks?'

Major Lazer: 'Lol. No'.

Seems ridiculous, no?

Like how Aphex Twin turned down Madonna.
