i always took "could care less" as in the person cares little enough, and then adds insult to injury by implying that they are so disinterested in the matter at hand that they aren't even going to bother caring the least amount applicable...therefore implying the exact same thing as "couldn't care less" so its sorta like a hyperbolic meta-insult.

but i dont think people usually think of it that way.

24/7 is incredibly useful. i dont feel like saying a bundle of sentences when it can be wrapped up in a fractionym.

i can't think of any possible reasons why you would say or type 24/7 instead of 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Don't like Americano though, as someone said, I feel like a douche if I have to say it. I've TRIED ordering a "large coffee please" and the girl always corrects/replies, "one grade Americano!!" all chirpy and shit. I'd get annoyed but she is kinda pretty, so I let it slide coz I'm weak like that :(

anyways, I think the point is modern day English doesn't belong to anybody, just say it however the fuck you like. I'm meants to speak it proper like but me words all get mixed up guv, don't mean that I ain't makin no sense of it tho cor blimey.

would also like to say that the opinions demonstrated in that article are not reflective of most UK citizens. we're just an incredibly grumpy group, and this lot felt like language was a good thing to be grumpy about. I also get the feeling that most of them have never left their two up two downs in herefordshire. The north of England is surprisingly enough, in England, and people use all kinda silly words up them parts.

one thing I noticed while I was over in the states, you guys seriously suck at swearing. you've managed fuck, but really you need to progress. Try using Twat and Cunt some more, Cunt is especially satisfying if you put a big emphasis on the T. YOU UTTER CIIAANNNTTT!!!

awesome!

lol irl. i just fell in love with TechDiff

Saying 'cunt' in certain company is likely to get one bloodied up here at worst, at the least it's heavily frowned upon even by some of the most foul-mouthed people I know. That said, I use 'twat' frequently as I just think it's a funny sounding word, and 'cunt' is one of my favourite words in our language, so I use it when I'm with my friends. But in public places I stick to 'twat' or 'dick.'

it's really weird/strange/funny isn't it, how such a small word can have such an impact and an 'ooooooooooo no' effect!.

it sounds really nasty and aggressive aswell when you say it with a dirty cockney accent!

Please speak English, my good man.

as an American, i cant say ive heard that before, but i would imagine its something along the lines of "pie in the sky" thought process...i.e....some incredibly naive and untenable idea or generalization about humanity/life/the earth, etc.

wow, if that is what it is, then as an American, surely you should have heard it umpteen times before??? :duckhunt:

ok, what does "blue sky thinking" mean ?????????

To maintain a positive outlook, or to concentrate on reaching the best outcome..

business banter, as in "we've got to focus on securing the jones account, all it needs is a bit of blue sky thinking"

another one I heard round the office while I was there was "to ride herd", as in "this needs to be a team effort, I need you guys to ride herd on this"

IMO just stupid phrases that boring business types make up in order to make their depressingly boring jobs sound all adventurous. Hated working in that fkn place and soo glad to be out of it :)

I think what annoys me far more than any of these "americanisms" is pointless little phrases. Things like "at the end of the day" and "when push comes to shove" etc.. well, not so much the phrases themselves but people using them in ridiculous contexts, or all the time...

Interesting that people say that using words like Cunt or twat are really offensive over there. At least amongst friends I'd quite happily call anyone of them a Cunt and know that none of them would take it as any more than just banter.

I've always felt that it's not as much the word itself, but in the delivery. Tones and emphasis tell the message. In the same way you can tell if someone is insulting you in any language by the way they say it. Still find it pretty odd that any word is considered rude or offensive.
