The government said they will pay out compensation to any uninsured businesses who have been affected by the riots, they have 12 days to apply

I wonder how many people from Nigeria are going to apply for this.

Statement from Warp.

Gutting

a sad nudging reminder that you want your bits in the cloud if you want them to stick around.

wrong. it's a sad reminder that some people hold nothing sacred.

how dare you tell me what the PIAS DADC fire means to me !!

to watmm, it's like the library of alexandria got burnt down all over again.

cloud storage has a physical manifestation somewhere. those can be razed to the ground also.

and then the backup center on the other side of the planet kicks in. they're a tad less susceptible to losing everything in a single fire.

really, though, i didn't mean "servers are invulnerable" so much as "i hope these labels have digital copies of all their stuff"

also you really are a grade a dickhole, eugene. truly.

Yeah here's another one, http://pitchfork.com...warehouse-fire/

So no chance left at finding a hidden stack of We R Are Why. anymore i guess? Who knows what other treasures could have been lost back in there somewhere.

They could really turn this around and used it as an opportunity to start fresh and do up some really nice special edition releases of stuff people love. Get back to form and roots. really make it event status. It could be a good thing.

look what happened when the Autechre box set was released...Warp and Autechre got a lot of flak for that, when it was completely unnecessary (the flak was unnecessary).

i doubt they'll do it, since there'll be little interest in it, and most people will probably moan at the prices.

Well there were a few things in play there. First off the boxset was totally incomplete and basically selling mostly stuff people already had. Cavity Job I'd guess many didn't care that much about. Now had the thing been complete w/ We R Are Why., Splitrmx, and Keynell Remixes on top of Cavity Job then you would have had a product in stead of a repackage, but that's neither here nor there.

This time is different. They've got tragic disaster cred to work w/ which is a real excuse to do something nice and the fans understand why they are doing it, and that it is for a good reason, no?

wouldn't all the artists still have the original masters somewhere?

it may be a good excuse to have some new remasters done with more modern technology

yeah, good pooint. a lot of people must still have a lot of stuff, somewhere.

but it'll be harder to find/recover the stuff that was made like 15-20 years ago! - the classic stuff. if they even still have it.

but they could definitely, and probably will, remaster and cut new rekkids of the stuff that is found again...

lol, good excuse for everybody to go through everythign again and maybe even put together some 'unreleased rarities' compiliations! that'd surely rake in the cash!!

As many of you may know, a large amount of Warp’s stock was sadly destroyed in the burning of the Sony DADC / PIAS warehouse earlierthis week, alongside the stock of many other great independent labels. We would like to thank everyone who has got in touch to offer theirsympathy and kind words. We just want to clarify a few things; the Bleep stock-room is separate from theSony DADC warehouse. Everything that is in-stock on the store is readyto ship and as usual we aim to dispatch all orders within one workingday. All Warp pre-orders will still be fulfilled, we aretrading as usual. Please continue supporting PIAS, your independent labels and stores intheir efforts to get the independent music community back up and running as quickly as they can.

I would be really surprised if they lost ANY masters in that fire. Logic would suggest that these were just the copies pressed for saledistribution pruposes only. The masters for any of the recording artists affected would most likely be safe in the offices of the artists or their record labels.

The music can most likely be repressed to the same standards of quality in every way, shape and form. Obviously, it is just a major pain and financial burden for the record labels to repress all of their stock over again.

To use an example from that Guardian article...

The release of Charlie Simpson's debut solo album, Young Pilgrim, was also severely delayed by the blaze, which destroyed all 30,000 units. Matthew Page, head of Simpson's label, said: "The album was due to be released this coming Monday. That, of course, will not happen now. It's a time issue. Our release campaign has been building for a long time, and it's like bringing the kettle to the boil, so that everything can come together at the same time. The fire has put the entire release in total jeopardy, and we feel very sorry for Charlie, who's been working on this album for a year. We're not clear what the way forward is now."

This guy has no album. End of story.

He almost 100% has his masters, artwork, etc on a hard drive in multiple locations.

After his label's insurance kicks in, they'll have to have a discussion as to whether or not to re-press the album again. They probably will. The problem is their marketing campaign was strategized in a way to have a strong release out the gate. That process costs a lot of money for a label (at least a decent one). It's back to the drawing board and a major do-over for all of those involved. Who knows if it will even happen for him on that label now. Let's hope he has a good music video.

A contrary example: If ( ... and I stress "if" ) that warehouse had a stack of Gak - Gak 12"s lying around in some box, in a corner, underneath a bunch of !!! (chk chk chk) records, that shit is history. Warp will probably never press those puppies again. The masters are most likely in RDJ's bank vault, but he'll never be bothered to press another quantity.

BoC could put together a little charity-release made of unreleased (proper unreleased, not that Sevenfortyseven deal!) tunes and charge a 100+ bucks for it, it'd still sell.

I was going to ask if there was a fund I could donate to but then I realised the best way to help out would be to buy something, derp. Will post on fb about this, though it's likely no one in my friends list will really care except one or two.

I did post the news as well, knowing that not a single person would care.

Maybe it'll help resell this kind of electronic music to a new audience if they market it right. Maybe.

You know, documentaries on the fire, talking to the relevant artists and label owners. Talking about the scenes blah blah. The fire as an entry point to ground the pitch. Kids who are 12/13 and younger now, will be the ones that cherry pick from it after all. That's inevitable, given that their parents record collections are full of this material.
