Sci-Fi Music with an "IDM" twist.

Long time lurker, (and as far as I can recall), first time poster. Love this forum; it's totally shaped my music catalog for the last decade.

Aside from the usual culprits like Autechre, Bola, Monolake, and (some) Jega, do you have any recommendations for thought-provoking, complex music that just stinks of Mass Effect, Blade Runner, Tron, or any of those other futuristic sci-fi classic films/games. The nice thing about the aformentioned artists is that you get that "sci-fi futurism" feeling, whilst still being engaged in some complexity and headphone listening action. I'm not about to go and purchase the OSTs for those movies as they just don't seem to captivate me enough for a dedicated listening session.

Thanks so much guys (and girls); I'm running out of paths to follow.

seems like you're limiting yourself on purpose. i shall be so bold as to say that if you're refusing to listen to the Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack, you're missing out.

I'm alreay familiar with pre-Greedy Baby Plaid (whom I love), although with the exception of some of their black-dog work find a little too whimsical to be sci-fi. I'm currently checking out Hecq and I'm a bit on the fence, but so far I'm really digging Arpanet and I'll check out the rest of Gerald Donald in a wee bit.

Listening to Quantum Transposition right now.....brilliant. I feel like I'm living in a world of circuits, transistors and electrons flowing all around me. Creepy haunting futuristic melodies, stacatto beats, and a unique sound palette. I'm going to check out the rest of Arpanet soon as well as a few other Gerald Donald aliases. Then on to Hecq!

I'm loving your suggestions guys - keep em coming!

B12 all the way, that's the first that comes to mind that I haven't seen mentioned. Plenty of Rephlex artists with that vibe as well...if you dug Gerald Donald's aliases be sure to check out Drexciya as well.

What else... I liked Harmonic 313 a lot, you might also dig Yellow_Magic_Orchestra or certain old jungle/dnb releases on youtube (Metalheadz label in particular) which sampled and utilized sci-fi references constantly. I wish I could give more dnb recommendations but there are some good watmm threads on the genre.

After extensive demoing, on the list to buy are:

Oneohtrix Point Never - awesome, BOC meets Mass Effect

Drexciya - awesome, but not too sci-fi; still I love the electro.

Arpanet - really really awesome; feels like I'm stuck in a computer from the future

Dopplereffekt - really really awesome too; similar to arpanet, but a little less cold

Hecq and a few others are on deck. You guys really steered my in the right direction, this has been immensely helpful.

Not usually one to pimp out my own stuff but...

The first one is loaded to the brim with hidden and not so hidden sound effects/dialogue/references to a lot of my favorite sci-fi movies, books and shows. And it's a completely braindance album to boot. Check it!

This guy did and he loves it:
