I thought that Daft Punk's soundtrack to Tron Legacy was very reminiscent of the Mass Effect music.

Agreed - though the guys who brought the great arpeggiated synth music and all that for the first two games have been booted in favor of Clint Mansell, which I find really disappointing. I mean, Mansell has certainly done his fair share of fantastic stuff but as someone who has composed music for an indie game in the past, it's pretty lame to know that BioWare said "Oh, we have more money for the third game? Shit, let's sack those indie composers and get a pro in here!"

So, the guy who wrote this is gone:

What was the Mass Effect 1 soundtrack inspired by? Any specific movie scores or something like that?

Almost certainly Vangelis, Walter/Wendy Carlos and so on.

The ME1 soundtrack was incredible, but they left out a few songs there were in the game, mainly that little arp pattern in the very beginning of the game when they were in the Normandy before landing.

Yeah, thought ME1 soundtrack was better than ME2 (which wasn't bad, but lacked what the first one had). I liked the synth-y sounds of the first one, gave it this nostaglic sci-fi feel. Stargate Universe also had some Vangelis liked moments in the music. Sci-fi soundtracks need more synths like the olden days, synths are from the future, OK!

Worth mentioning Disrupt's Foundation Bit album, the music itself only partially references sci fi but the track names and film samples might make it work for you and it's just bloody good.

I read this on Discogs about that album:

I tried. Then I tried again. Sadly, to me this is a truly awful album. If you like electro reggae style self indulgence with hammy unrelated sampling (somehow now considered dub) with little variation, and enjoy sweating the small stuff, then this release is for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer a bit of variety and substance to your music then save your $2 that you may spend when you see this in the bargain bin section of your local retailer, and buy yourself a coffee or other treat. You'll enjoy it more, and for longer.

Totally agree! I'm actually working on a soundtrack for a sci-fi platformer game and I bought a Roland SH-32 specifically for the job...oscillators + programmable arpeggiator = sci-fi!

These are all really good suggestions everyone - I've followed up on almost all of them.

I've been listening to alot of DMX Krew lately too, and there's quite a bit of futurism on albums like "March to the Stars" and "Wave Funk". 80's retro futuristic stuff.

Check out this new set from Dopplereffekt it sounds much more sci-fi/soundtrack as he seems to have finally renovated his sound palette.
