The Warp 20 set had some great moments... definitely was hoping for an "archive" release. According to SP, he was tired of over complicating things. The new direction was to avoid going up his own arse, as he put in one of the more recent magazine interviews. Yes, songs like "Plug Me In" sound a bit gay... but honestly, he's just having fun these days... Do I listen to and love all of his latest work? No. But frankly, I admire his bass playing enough to continue following him. Least he continues to release music regularly as well, unlike RDJ :( Curious though, who do you guys follow these days?

I wait for releases of Sp, afx and Ae but I've lost interest as there were no releases to blow my mind. So I rather listen to their older things and these last few years I put most effort in minimalist music that is quite radical on some points.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

just listen to "Planet Gear." There's no reason that track shouldn't fit with the best moments in his career. The whole thing is brilliant, particularly the way he pays respect to his drill and bass side at the end of the song. It's a finale.

he lost me after hello everything

I found most his stuff pre-2003 to be some of the most engaging and beautifully intricate music coming out of that wave of 'idm' producers. he is and always will be extremely talented no matter what he releases but I agree with the above sentiment

also so help me god, If i have to endure hearing Shobaleader ever again I will burn my neighbors house down, reading how he produced it was great tho, so much went into the album and its quite gear-nerdful to read about how he makes his music, but thats like saying 'I spent three years plucking the asshole hairs off a young male goat to make this magnificent paint brush. that's what I used to make this really crappy painting... but the brush...' it really doesn't matter how cool you made the music if it still sounds like shit (example: half of richard devines' work) because the only thing that made me dig the album a little more was hearing him explain how he made it.

I bet when he releases something totally different, people won't hate Shobaleader as much and will see it as a fun lil' thing. That's the way I see it. The whole album is meant to be kind of tongue-in-cheek and most people don't like humor with their music. I remember reading a Frank Zappa interview about this, so it has to be true.

I'm pretty sure most musical masterminds like to make funny music from time to time.

me thinks that album was put together by any other artist you wouldn't have given it the time of day, or considered it tongue and cheek, I think people just say that in hopes that he doesn't keep doing this style. I found that most people I know who liked his music pre-2002 or so really dislike the last few albums under the SP title and shoebaleader, and people who have no idea of his old work like it much more. Maybe thats just jaded IDM fanboyism though...

To each his own. I like humor in music ala Zappa or even aphex singing about skullfucking your or sucking milkmans tits... but I dont necessarily consider that album to be very funny other than the 'oh sweet lord, make this stop' with my mates as we listened to it, its still gotta interest me or have emotional content besides incomprehensible vocoder garbling and fuzzed out guitars and basses.

Fair enough, but he did say in that Sound On Sound interview that's he'd be "returning to a less accessible style."

And I think if it was put out by an unknown artist, people would actually be impressed because it wouldn't be compared to things like Go Plastic, Hard Normal Daddy, Music is Rotted One Note, etc.

I did, and this track is a perfect example of new squarepusher I can't stand.

Put on Planet Gear.. you hear a garbled electric guitar chug and the most uninspired tinny beat he's ever put to tape.

Then I got put on 'Beep Street' off Hard Normal Daddy.. and am instantly calmed by the clarity of the mix in comparision to JaS. The beat is lush, the bass is smooth.
