You find highly individual artists that try to sound like nothing else and now you are looking for people that copy these. then you are sad that the copies are not good enough. that makes no sense. go keep looking for more individual artists that do not sound like anything else

I think a LOT of people feel the same way as this atm. in fact i know they do.

I don't think electronic music has gotten worse, it's just the more you hear of something the more it takes to impress you. When a person first starts getting into a new genre (and I mean a totally new genre like folk vs techno, not something like wobblestep vs brostep) they'll probably find all sorts of musicians that expand their idea of what music can be. But after a while they'll come to understand the underlying concepts at play it gets harder & harder for new stuff to have that same wow factor. That's probably why so many people over 40 still think 60s rock is the genre's highpoint.

I mean, I do hear a lot of people saying how Aphex/BoC/etc was what got them into this sort of ambient experimentalish electronic music so it would make sense.

at the topic

discussions like this always just go round and round in circles. it's all a matter of opinions and there's no right or wrong.

at the end of the day you like what you like, you don't like what you don't like, and what bores you bores you.

I think the featured artists are the only thing which sticks this forum in that IDM era so to speak so when there are no new albums or tours then we're just left waiting.

I think maybe a general artists section with more artists would be better for reference if nothing else.

And as soon as the Featured Artist forums go away, people will complain "where's the BoC threads" (or worse repost existing threads instead of finding them) and also complain when [insert featured artist here] has a new release, the non-fans of that artist will complain "Why's there so many threads about [featured artist]. They need their own subforum, ffs"

It's not broke, don't try to fix it. There's a reason WATMM has existed for 13 years.

i heard a remix with vocals on the LUDD eP this year that was quite lovely. Sure it wasn't ground breaking, but it sure did hit the spot. And yes, that doesn't happen all the time. Mostly happens when i'm getting something right on the guitar.

that'll be DJ Spunkshower

Errr, I was hoping for 0 replies but through one squinted eye I spy about 30!!

I should never go near my laptop when lubricated with ale, I cannot bring myself to read this thread, especially in the cold light of day and sober lol. I just love getting a big wooden spoon out and having a good stir, though I must admit, even in the most drunken of rants, there is always a modicum of troooth.

Yes. Three albums to investigate:

1 - Rustie, Glass Swords

2 - Machinedrum, Room(s)

3 - Tiger & Woods, Through the Green

i don't get what people find so great about Rustie? i like some elements of his tracks, but... i just don't find him/his music that interesting/inspiring/great really. i spose some of it sounds quite fresh, in some ways. but i dunno, just not much of a fan of it.

not heard Tiger & Woods yet.

I don't get rustie either but I figure it's an age thing, as most of the raves about him seem to be coming from the young'uns.

Won't listen to tiger & woods on principle, see bad artist names thread. And 'that's their real names' argument doesn't hold water since they just could've called themselves something else.

Room(s) is a fantastic album and probably the best thing he's done to date.

I'm old too. Good music is good music regardless of your age or the producer's. He is 28 I think.

Tiger & Woods = disco edits. Besides the funny name it doesn't seem like they have anything to do with the meme. But OK you have a point, it's hard to tell because there is no info on them atm.

i agree. so therefore i just don't find Rustie's music to be good music.

i would've said he was about 20, tho. not almost 30. 'cos he looks well young.

not that it should matter. but sometimes it just does, naturally.

i'll never be one of those late 40's-50 something's, getting down with the kids in the clubs, acting like i'm 25! lol

I agree; I think Rustie sounds like music for youngsters.

I don't think that whole "purple"/wonky/seasick synth sound is going to age very well.

But who knows!

It's perfectly OK if you think it's bad music.

This is a problem for me as well. But I don't know, I guess you have to assume your cooldad position and deal with it in a graceful manner, you don't have to go to all ages shows? I don't go to parties obviously targeted at 18 yo's. But if I want to listen to this Rustie album at home or with friends I don't think I have to apologize for it. Fuck that! Also, old people are very much into jazz, classical, house, experimental music. It should not be any different with aging IDM / electronic guys.

'Electronic Black Hole'. we're currently starting to be sucked in as we speak...! that's why we're getting lots of repetitions and copies being flung around left, right and centre. as all the data gets sucked in and mangled and chewed up and corrupted, and ultimately, destroyed.

dont be fooled, sirch IS the electronic black hole. it is wise to keep your distance

There must not be more music outside of IDM! No way! IDM classics forever!

add Drexciya, Ceephax, Ed DMX, Flying Lotus, Team Doyobi, Monolith, Jodey Kendrick, Brothomstates, Leila Arab, and a load of others aswell. but again, these all seem to be mostly Warp/Rephlex/Skam associated artists...

but what can ya do!? they're good, heh.

I'm down with that, I think it would be nice to move the "official artist threads" to one convenient subforum. I mean, I can't be the only one always trying to find the Ghostbox and Drexciya and Flying Lotus threads right. That way general music discussion could be about scenes/genres, music theory, new and not as established artists, etc. Oh and we need a Radiohead+Thom Yorke have way too many duplicate threads consolidation subforum.

It's better that WATMM's moved on to a wider range of musicians/genres. Forums with too narrow a focus tend to become awkward hero worship affairs or dudes going on about how they are the few & proud who truly understand music. See: any fan forum ever.

forum is good. IDM era music brings together minds attracted to that style. that style which was the most advanced for its time, and in many ways remained as advanced. we have electro and electronic fans of forward thinking music in general - idm etc.

so, it is a unique place to talk about music, as this could be the only place on the entire internet to find other fans of say, mouse on mars. or the orb. or drexciya. all in one location.

das my take.

^this.

At this point the artist pages come off like archives more than anything. The last post I enjoyed in the Aphex subforum (that wasn't about a live set) was the one with the Rephlex Records video clips/documentary. I had never seen the Grant Wilson-Claridge interviews before. Most days I'm in music discussion or general banter, which have literally have threads (for example, retro sci-fi art, obscure underrated films) with an amount of intelligent and enjoyable discussion I can't find elsewhere.

Oh God it's still number fucking two on the leader board!

I still can't bring myself to read it lol. Sometimes I become a bear with a sorehead after a few beers, so I don't get all luvey dovey.

I do love watmm though (that's you) I just get a bit fucked off with certain aspects of the IDM culture.

Spinning the new Fear Ratio 12" remixed by Plaid, it's fucking awesome.

Love you all loads (groan)
