"I gotta ask management to take down that sign," Skrillex says as we pull into a parking lot. The sign reads lofts starting in the high 300's. He straps on a black backpack, which contains his entire studio (a MacBook and Dre Beats Pro headphones)"

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

That Pitchfork interview made me feel I was too harsh on him, he likes a lot of the same music as me and he's just trying to do his thing.

Then that Rolling Stone interview put me right back to hating him as a person again. He's such a whiny, self obsessed little kid. Everything he does he feebly attempts to make into some deep statement about life like the shitty little emo he is. The fact that he ran away after he found out he was adopted to join an emo band, the fact that he tries to make his haircut some statement about how deep and complex he is as a person, him proudly boasting about how he yelled "fuck you" at a teacher because they told him to stop smoking, and that bit at the end when he "get's deep" was just so childish.

I mean, even if my favourite producer in the world was talking like this in interviews I would struggle to respect them.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I get so much shit from my friends for not liking him. I get treated like this massive hipster wanker. Not fair dude, not fair.

I don't know... people I know that like Skrillex don't try to shove it in my face... probably because they know that I've been into electronic music for about 30 years!

He does seem like a cool dude and given the opportunity, I'd chill with him... I just wouldn't tell him his music sucks to his face... I'd be like "Yeah... that's cool!" and drive home listening to AE on full blast.

no but seriously, this sounds like a fat girls rant against whatever attractive female pop artist is popular at the moment.

what?

theres nothin wrong with some haterade now and then. I proudly sip on it via skirllex..I don't even mind Lady Gaga and whatever else is popular...

The problem with ol' Skirl is that he is now such a pop milestone for electronic music that its completely impossible to avoid comparison in most conversations-everything to someone unacquainted with electronic music is immediately held up against the monolith of all technological music that is Skrillex.

I don't hate the man himself, he's probably alright. But I certainly hate his name becoming synonymous with "techno" and other such things.

slight lol, but not really, it's 2012 - now it's time for nonsense like skinny female chicks you can't sing to say horseshit about Adele or meta discussions about the debate of discussing Lana Del Rey. Or this...

Your friends shouldn't give you shit about disliking Skrillex. I wouldn't perpetuate it either. I have a friend who is a huge Skrillex fangirl (we just avoid discussion and respect our opinions) and other cousin who likes him but also listens to old dubstep too. If they're going to bro you until you like Skrillex then well, fuck them I guess.

I didn't read the Rolling Stone article because it did seem annoying so I don't care. Also, I fucking hate Rolling Stone because superficial, bias as fuck yet always behind the times, major label ass-kissing piece of shit magazine. I heard a local "alternative rock" radio station play Skrillex yesterday and lumped him with Prodigy, NIN, and Depeche Mode as "major crossover electronica artist" - so whether he likes it or not he's being hyped and prepped as a cash cow.

That's my dilemma too and I think it's just fine to have that against his music. He seemed to flirt more with being a "voice" for EDM last year but I think he's backed off that and matured, so I can't blame him personally. Also, besides likely major label interest and people who make things like Scion and Transformers ads, I find it fascinating that people from all sorts of backgrounds flock to brostep and this watered-down but arguably more pleasant EDM (like deadmau5, Pretty Lights) - DJ Tiesto, Guetta, Diplo, Moby, the members of the Doors, etc. That's what fascinates me.

Last week at a party a guy I was having a tipsy conversation with managed to tell me this entire sentence: "Do you know Skrillex? They're cool, I'm gonna see them next month! I hope it's gonna be like the Prodigy concert I've been to - it was amazing, those two guys are MAD!". Even though I've been lurking for some time I then felt the urge to log in to post this.

So, hi everyone!

Skrillex remembers the moment when he realized that everything had changed: a year ago at a 3,600-ticket show in Austin. "At that time, it was the biggest show I'd ever sold out by myself," he recalls. "And I felt this new responsibility, like, 'Fuck, it's real now. I'm not just playing raves and clubs, but they're here to watch me.'"

The other vindicating moment came shortly afterward, when he paid off his debt in one day. Now, just a year later, Skrillex is turning money away, including $200,000 to put his song "Kyoto" in a G.I. Joe movie and $300,000 to do a promotion with a mobile-phone company. "The minute I start to overthink something, I know I shouldn't do it."

I really don't know what to say about his fans that hasn't already been said, but it's unfair to judge his creditability based on the ignorance of his fans. If I chose what I listened to based off of how much I respected the fans, almost anything outside of electronic music would be shit to me.

As far as him being prepped as a cash cow, I kind of dug that statement ^ depending on how true/accurate it is

Isn't the journalist from Rolling Stone that prick who defines himself a "pickup artist"? That would be enough for me.

Also david, the quote "Could you leave the lights alone please? Stop flashing the fucking lights." in your signature is from one of my favourite tracks off my favourite album ever and it's been stuck in my head for years. Nice to see I am not the only one who likes ISDN here.

I agree with that. Just seems inane when all the comparisons focus on his hair, his fans, the new shitty termanology like "brostep, complextro"

What i'm trying to figure out is does he really jeopardize the integrity of electronic music, or is it just getting people into better sounding pop music and steering them away from shit like justin bieber and what not, while kind of diminishing categorization? To be honest, It really makes me lose interest in music at all when it becomes just about comparisons and outdoing each other. I like the fact that he makes it a point to say he's just making the kind of music he wants to make, because we should all be so privileged instead of spending our time focused on what we dont like

I got that for a birthday present - odd to think of that as being limited. Was it 10,000 that were made? Anyways, a great album.

I take it you are one of the few skrillex fans in the forum, who uses "you just hate him cos he's popular" as though its trumps anything?
