I have an innocent question to ask.

I have GTAIV and played it for about half an hour and then stopped for some reason( maybe I didnt like it?)

Im certainly not spending 60 bucks or whatever on GTA V, but Im interested in peoples thoughts on GTA IV. What made it a good game? Does it get hella boring quick like GTA III, or is it a gamechanger?

Im poor as shit and I still have a copy, so I figure I might as well jump on it when I have free time, but wanted opinions here.

I'm looking for the rare combination of someone who doesn't like RDR or GTA IV all that much but likes GTA V.

Any takers?

why are you even interested in this game? you're clearly not gonna like it (judging by your recent posts). it's basically the same as GTA 4, only more of everything and a bigger world to play in.

i heard the controls are somewhat more 'fun' as in not as realistic physics as in GTA4, i that accurate? I felt GTA4 was a step down in terms of just fluidity of gameplay. That's sort of my main irk when a lot of games increase the realism, they opt for more motion capture graphics and real physics and rarely ever are able to meld really fun fluid gameplay with that.

there had ought to be a music studio in-game, so people can make edm while they play. if they had that, i'd buy it.

(edit)

i sent rockstar a feature request for that just now.

Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus are already working on tracks in it right now for it's launch. They remembered the interview where Hudmo said he used that playstation music making program

a few other things I'm curious about, mostly minor stuff

-in GTA 3 you were very easily able to increase your star level to the point of being chased down with tanks at the start of the fresh game, is it the same in GTA4 or do we just get militarized swat teams?

-can you still not shoot out the front of your car while driving? If so why have they not added this obviously fun feature? They could potentially make a much better version of this weird arcade game

-is the entire map available when you start a fresh game?

- are there codes for manifesting each type of transportation, ie: scuba outfit, boat, parachute, helicopter, bike, jet etc ?

- are most indoor areas still inaccessible? meaning are only the indoor spaces that are part of the story or to get items accessible. I read that you can no longer shoot up the hospital like in GTA4, true?

- have they added any environmental destruction, like shooting a rocket at a building causes part of it to crumble or things of that nature?

-are there any health replenish or weapon codes available yet? Sorry if this is noob :(

I'm almost going to pull the trigger on this one, but I think i'll wait till i finish up some projects so i don't lose my whole weekend to the GTA experience.

I think it's very different from GTA IV. I can understand why you would think GTA IV was boring. I liked it because it was so technically impressive at the time. But GTA IV was tonally stuck halfway between serious and ridiculous and the gameplay tried too hard to be grounded in reality. This game builds on the same technology but is completely geared towards fun. I think it's a fantastic game. Great writing, great set pieces, interesting characters, beautiful environment, great music. It continiues to amaze me by its scope and attention to detail.

I can't deal with this quote system so:

i heard the controls are somewhat more 'fun' as in not as realistic physics as in GTA4, i that accurate? I felt GTA4 was a step down in terms of just fluidity of gameplay. That's sort of my main irk when a lot of games increase the realism, they opt for more motion capture graphics and real physics and rarely ever are able to meld really fun fluid gameplay with that.

I'd say the driving physics in GTA IV weren't that fun because the suspensions were over the top loose and there wasn't much grip. It's completely different in GTA V. You can drive like a maniac, control your car in the air and can take a lot of hits to damage your car beyond repair. I wasn't sure I liked it at first but it's a lot of fun to drive around the freeways and weave in and around traffic without effort. It encourages you to take risks. The shooting gameplay has improved but not to the level of Max Payne 3 unfortunately.

-in GTA 3 you were very easily able to increase your star level to the point of being chased down with tanks at the start of the fresh game, is it the same in GTA4 or do we just get militarized swat teams?

There are tanks but fighting the cops will get you killed very quickly. It's not hard to outrun cops but fighting cops and surviving until you get to tanks isn't trivial.

-can you still not shoot out the front of your car while driving? If so why have they not added this obviously fun feature? They could potentially make a much better version of this weird arcade game

You still shoot out of the side window and you can't aim without shooting. I don't like this.. There are some weird control decisions in this game.

-is the entire map available when you start a fresh game?

Yes. A lot of gameplay is locked away by story unlocks but you can go anywhere at any time.

- are there codes for manifesting each type of transportation, ie: scuba outfit, boat, parachute, helicopter, bike, jet etc ?

There are cheats for most of the different types of vehicles and equipment.

- are most indoor areas still inaccessible? meaning are only the indoor spaces that are part of the story or to get items accessible. I read that you can no longer shoot up the hospital like in GTA4, true?

Most of it is not accessible. There are some stores you can rob but you can't enter 90%+ of all buildings. To be fair, it's just not economically justifiable to provide interiors for all these buildings. You can't enter hospitals. But there's a lot more interesting stuff to see than the interiors of buildings...

- have they added any environmental destruction, like shooting a rocket at a building causes part of it to crumble or things of that nature?

Not really. Things you think you can drive over with a car are mostly destructible. Everything else isn't.

-are there any health replenish or weapon codes available yet? Sorry if this is noob :(

Yes

I'm almost going to pull the trigger on this one, but I think i'll wait till i finish up some projects so i don't lose my whole weekend to the GTA experience.

I'd recommend it. There's a lot of great game design in here. There's some interesting contextualization of the violence with some of the characters. A lot of the Trevor gameplay like the rampages are probably highlights of the series for me. Trevor is such a fantastic character. It's very refined and as said earlier despite being such an enormous game there's a sense of vision behind it all which is quite an achievement.

Ego covered it all pretty well. Just this one thing though:

"-can you still not shoot out the front of your car while driving? If so why have they not added this obviously fun feature? They could potentially make a much better version of this weird arcade game

You still shoot out of the side window and you can't aim without shooting. I don't like this.. There are some weird control decisions in this game."

I think what he was asking if it's possible to shoot stuff in front of you while driving. It's true that the gun is being fired from the side window, but it's not like in the GTA 3-era games where you could only shoot to the sides. It's the same as in GTA IV where you can shoot in a 360 degree while driving.

I've been playing the game for 15 hours since Tuesday now, and I'm still not bored by it. Only 14 missions (out of 69) in or something. Not even counting the side stuff. I haven't encountered a single glitch and the framerate has been stable 99% of the time and I honestly have no idea how they managed to make a game like this on hardware this ancient, since it's actually damn good looking too. Everything about this game is perfect, if you ask me, and that's something I've never been able to say about a game before. 8235/10

i heard the only frame rate issues are on the xbox 360 if you play it from the disc, but the problem of loading textures fast enough is solved when you put the game on thumb drive(?) (didn't know you could do that, i haven't played one for at least a couple of years)

the only thing I don't love about the graphics (and it's a minor complaint, the game looks beautiful) is the texture resolution on certain stuff seems noticeably low, like a brick wall graphic or a metal grate texture.

I guess we'll have to wait for the PC version to get god-mode codes and 'debug mode' esque mods

every-time i play a new GTA game I'm always imagining all this untapped potential with an engine like this filled with so much detail.

I have one criticism of the game though (and probably the only one).

The soundtrack is pretty underwhelming compared to previous games.

It's not close to being as good as IV's and San Andreas' imhoghohoho

Also... What was so great about 3's soundtrack? I don't remember anything special about that soundtrack.

San Andreas had a bit too much guitar for my excellent taste. IV was really good though. None of them are bad. It's just that V is so perfect in every way imaginable. Setting anything up against that would be rude.

In my excellent opinion.

The "ambient" station should have used actual ambient. This is more downtempo n shizzle.

Maybe a little more variety could have been used, but I'm not bothered by the radio.

Can't wait for the online to be launched... The second they do that, their servers will explode.

I really like FlyLo, but his station in this game is actually pretty shit.

If you were into 80/90's hip hop, San Andreas' soundtrack was excellent. Plus the San Fierro Underground station was awesome too.

I like that Spanish station. And the country one. And the hipster one, because it's got tracks with cheap drum machines and vocals with lots of reverb. FlyLo is alright, but every time I listen to it, this weird Tyler The Creator track seems to be playing.

Have anyone seen the thunderstorms in this game yet? It's amazing looking.

And just for the record, I'm exclusively talking about the radio station's music, not the "cinematic" music (which is pretty awesome).

yeah, i think that if you've heard all these sounds a million times a million years ago, the stations are probably pretty boring. But it is a game for 10 yr olds and they haven't heard 90's hip hop or windowlicker and have no idea what ambient is. Perhaps the guy that programmed the stations in IV isn't there anymore or was overruled by internal politics or the people in marketing.

Not having played the game yet, but probably being correct, in my generally aligned with the ultimate truth, opinion.

Anyone found the baseball bat yet? From what I've heard you have to find it yourself, but I have no idea where to look. ANYONE!?

The country one is like the official Trevor station. And since Trevor is the best thing of all time, that automatically makes it the best station of all time.

Okay, I'll agree that Trevor is the best thing of all time.

Those scenes/missions with him, Wade and his cousin Floyd, are probably some of the funniest shit I've ever seen in a Vidijya gaeyhm.
