Article : In Left Field: Aphex Twin's 'Drukqs'

Another re-appraisal / article about Drukqs ten years on. Also unfortunately mentions those useless cunts Radiohead a lot:

I think its quite useful to contrast the reviews of Druqs and Amnesiac. this bit of the article is good:

  Quote
The thing is, though, that critics explicitly cited the exact same reasons for loving Kid A and Amnesiac and objecting to Drukqs. Allmusic’s five-star review of Kid A* said Radiohead “strove for the unsettling ‘intelligent techno’ sound of Autechre and Aphex Twin, with skittering beats and stylishly dark sonic surfaces.” When reviewing Drukqs, which is for all intents and purposes nothing but “skittering beats and stylishly dark sonic surfaces,” Allmusic gave it three stars, objecting to its “feel of recordings long since past, from the quiet ambient techno of his [Richard James, a.k.a. Aphex Twin] breakthrough, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, to the demonically extroverted programming of Richard D. James Album and the Come to Daddy EP.”So Radiohead get acclaim for integrating Aphex Twin’s groundbreaking sonic experiments into their sound, while Aphex Twin himself gets not much more than a shrug for continuing with those experiments.

This article is a completely cringeworthy redundant piece of garbage, IMO. It reads like a proof for reviews to be subjective. Well duh. And somehow by having proved such 'quintessential' point, the author seems to think he actually can make an objective assessment of Drukqs. In short Drukqs is great, based on some kind of logical deduction. So based on where people think Pause and Amnesiac should be, logic tells where Drukqs actually should be. Opinion should be objective after all?

How about just telling what Drukqs means to you, and has meant to you for the past ten years? Instead of trying to disprove some 10 years old reviews.

Disclaimer: I admit, I have not read every word of the entire article. (it's pure torture)

So we have three big albums from heavy hitters in the electronic music world, all of which came out within six months of one another. One can generally be called “great,” one “good,” and one “average-to-good.”

One can generally be called “great,” one “good,” and one “quite-good.”
