Well, I don't want to be the guy who rubs it in, but I did get the download code sorted, and the album is fantastic. Really pushes into some new directions for Belbuy Poly-- there's a psyche rock vibe that's crept in a bit amongst the library stuff.

Cool glad you got the download sorted. Mine turned up first thing this morning, though only just had a chance to sit and listen. Really rather wonderful, and enjoying the slightly different direction this one goes in. Still very recognisably Belbury Poly though :)

Damn this is a good album. Was kinda wary after the lukewarm Wire review but it's a stormer. Production is perfect and the introduction of more funk/psychedelic elements is really well judged. Jupp really knocked it out the park with this one.

I think this is the best Belbury Poly album yet. It feels to me like this is the album he's been striving for all along with BP somehow; I thought As The Crow Flies was definitive Ghost Box until I heard this. And The Journeyman's Tale sums up the 'H' word much better than anything from Jacques Derrida.

lots of this seem like a natural development from scarlet ceremony on the owl's map, which is one of my fav BP tracks.

What I thought as well. Listening back, From An Ancient Star doesn't really seem to fit in between The Owl's Map and The Belbury Tales.

even the artwork on FaAS is rather un-ghostboxy. it never clicked with me as much as the owl's map as a cohesive album.

but i suspect that it might some day.

it will. i usually couldn't really "get into" anything past the hidden door until recently when it finally clicked. the thing about 'from an ancient star' (and usually most ghostbox releases) is that they're always best to listen to entirely- as part of a whole picture. because of this i find it impossible to say one record is better or worse than another- because they still feel like part of the same universe.

i think that this is house, jupp, and brooks's most impressive achievement. it really does feel like all the releases are happening in belbury or ghost box world or whatever, a place where hp lovecraft, open university, cold war dread, quatermass, library music, obscure folk tracks, and public information films meet. the wire magazine did a great article a while back that said it way better than i did.

and i managed to say that without using that 'h' word. :whistling:

the opening piano of 'pilgrim's path' tricks my brain into anticipating 'porpoise song'

starts right as the guy hits the water (0:45 - 52):

Can't say that I picked up on that, but now that you mention it... (I love Porpoise Song).

FAKE EDIT: Midway through typing this Norman Records posted that same Monkees video on their FB page. Very h****ological.

the geography really stands out for me as well.

i don't think i like this release as much as the willows but it is still killer.
