I guess we have different interpretations of what the hype machine is. There is no doubt that pitchfork (insert music blog of disdain) writers have to buy new keks when Ae release a new album, but Autechre do not need hype to claim any sort of status - their music does all the talking.

Skrillex needs all they hype in the world to make up for his mediocre releases.

There's nothing wrong with his music, and I would say that people like him for what he creates, it's definitely not to WATMM tastes but what is?

It's not bad because I don't like it. It's bad because of all the things in that rant which some bloke posted in the million page skrillex thread.

It's insincere music. I would respect him more if he was making this because it was sincerely something he loved and just wasn't good at, but he is a media whore.

How do you know it's insincere music? Why do you think he doesn't enjoy making it?

Cause of his history? First he's in some shite screamo band, then he does something else that is kind of trendy, and now that brostpe is popular he's all over it?

Because people's tastes never change? We've all made/liked different kinds of music.

I started out playing shitty hardcore/punk, then I was in some metal bands and now I do something completely different. But I guess I don't like what I do either?

His whole shtick though was to try and become popular through riding trends.

Look I get it - you're fighting for the underdog (lol). But here's the reality:

Autechre became famous because of their ability to create unique, beautiful music. They didn't start out with a thousands press releases.

Skrillex became famous because of the thousand press releases, not because of his music.

I'm not rooting for the underdog, I just think WATMM has this real bullshit attitude to the guy because he snuck into your secret electronic tree house and stole all your success or something.

It's just all a bit silly, the guy makes music that people like and he got big, more power to him.

Autechre make music that people like, and they got big.

There's no real difference between either of them.

I think this is what people take exception with. He (according to that long Skrillex post) doesn't make his music, at least not completely. He has a stable of ghost writers who mostly put it together for him.

You must live in a pretty sheltered part of the world/internet innit.

I don't think the music being insincere makes it objectively bad. If someone likes the sound of it, it's good music to them. It could be a money making scheme, it could be an band who focuses on originality in music, or it could be a computer that auto generated the stuff.

But my main point here is that wtf Harmony Korine + Selena + Vanessa Hudgens + Skrillex + Riff Raff + James Franco??

So Harmony is using Skrillex for his score? This is pretty shocking and upsetting.

Also what are you talking about Dan C, Autechre is no way close to as hyped as Skrillex. Hell I think most would agree Aphex Twin is the most well known on the watmm feat. artists and I rarely run into anyone who knows his stuff. Last time I asked and showed them my Windowlicker LP I got the famous response "ah yeah I love them." The point Chengod is making is that some music is produced more for the intent of it being easily consumed or marketed. While other music is more subtle and abstract. Music that has the current mainstream sound of being loud, simple, and flashy is not interesting because its not deviant to what has already been established. There's fresh and there's trendy. Skrillex is trendy and corporate. And in my book authenticity goes out the window when musicians sell out like that these days, because there's no reason why you need that much money to keep on doing what you love. The intention for creation is no longer authentic and therefore it is less interesting and worse (objectively).

Try an experiment - ask 100 random people if they've heard of Autechre. Then ask 100 random people if they've heard of Skrillex.

Smetty - the hype machine was still there in the 90s, it was just MTV* and music mags instead of youtube and blogs. Sure it wasn't as in your face 24/7, but it was still there. And yes I remember seeing AE videos on MTV, late at night, maybe once a week, because the one person with taste (balls to stand up to corporate whoring?) decided to put it on.

If Skrillex had been around then - he would have had his videos on heavy rotation.

*Yes, MTV used to actually play music videos.

Look, I love Autechre, but to say that even now they would receive ample "playtime" on some sort of MTV show is ludicrous. Its not danceable, and its often times too abstract to penetrate a significant medium.

Look how many great songs had videos on AMP, never to be heard from again. And those were mostly dancefloor hits.
