I'm looking for a spot with a friend of mine. The search is not going so well since everything is super expensive. I'm waiting to hear back about a place that has a large enough living room for a pool table. Shenanigans will be had if we pin this spot down.

place is kinda messy, but took pics anyway. the first two are of my sun room/poker room where you first walk in, i usually use it for storage and my workbench for domestic projects, etc. the rest are of my red-themed apartment.

I love all the eclectic art and vintage furniture, but the red theme is intensely serial-killer.

i'll try blue next

the best was is it's the common/shared wall with my neighbor. so he loses a bit of space and i gain a little space, which = zero space is actually "lost", so that makdes it OK.

whereas most people dream of owning a house, I can only dream of being able to rent a 1BR apartment.

Christ, I even dream of owning a house. America's economy will recover some time in your life Mr. Pessimism.

edit* I could afford it if I chose to dine on ramen for the next few months.

worth it?

Some of these places make me so jealous. I moved into a new flat recently, really love it. I'll snap some pics tonight if I remember! Looking for inspiration...

it's all a little uneven, because the house is very old. it was the town's brewery a hundred years ago.

would it be intrusive if I asked how much these places cost, and how comfortably you can afford them? do you have roommates?

I'm interested to know that as well, some of these places are really nice.

My flat's a two bedroom, live with two other people and it costs us £1170 a month for rent. I'll get pics soon so you can marry the price to your impressions. But I'm fairly sure that price will make you vomit. We get ripped off in the UK anyway, moreso in London where I live.

I live in a 4 bedroom machonette (dunno the English translation) for about 250 euro's a month which is dirt cheap, as you'll have trouble finding a 1 room apartment for that price here if it's not anti-squad related. Old 1950's worker ghetto's ftw.

On the anti-squad tip, which is a government trick here to house abandoned, empty (office)buildings ready for demolition or sale waiting for years to happen, supposedly to protect them from being squatted. I wonder if this kind of thing exists outside of Holland? You can sometimes luck out on incredible deals, with lush apartments or office floors for about 180 euro's a month, including electricity/water costs. Has helped me out during study.

yeah well can't complain too much, it's nice and spacious living anti squat, but I would easily trade it for some permanency, don't like having to move every now and then.. at least now it's a pretty fixed place, because this place is set for destruction - no chance of someone buying this, and no short term plans for this area as far as I know... could be here for a few years I hope..

250eu p/m is nice dude. would trade any day. as long as I have a part of the house that's a bit cut off from the neighbors. what happened to your old place? or is that the old place? that was decent.

if you're thinking long term and don't have a ridiculous credit score, a 30 yr mortgage on $120k at 3.7% (this is very low, but interest rates are very low these days) is under $800 a month. that's only the mortgage, and that's considering my region which has cheaper properties overall. i couldn't imagine taking out a loan for more than 200k/30 yr.

of course you can rent anything from condos/apts/cabins in the woods, and that may be a lot cheaper but the obvious advantage of owning is you get to sell when/if you move out.

last edit - a mortgage typically costs less than apartments here!

Sadly, I'm still stuck at home and can't afford to get out of my parents' house as of yet and I'm 22. I'm hoping to be able to get out by next summer, though.

dude, don't feel bad about that at all. im a few years older than you and in the same situation. economic depressions suck...and its also pathetic to be living with your parents..but on the upside, you are saving a significant amount of money away while others spend half-75 percent of what they earn on rent and utilities. I try to justify it to myself by working non-stop....that way it doesn't feel as horrible.

stay at home as long as possible dudes!

Tyler was right, the things you own end up owning you. enjoy your freedom now.

Been leisurely house hunting for several months now but I'm about to kick it up a notch now that I've got money in the bank. Fortunately I'm on a month to month lease atm so there isn't a lot pressure.

I'm in a bit of a personal dilemma though...Do I go for a place in the country with acreage and space, but dated farm house style and 30 minutes away from anything...or do I go with a place in the city thats a bit more my style and close to things and people.

Really like the idea of being secluded in the country and I don't mind renovating and putting in the effort. On the flip, my girl and I really like hitting on the ladies and bringing them home...I can't see that being very easy when your home is 30 minutes away in the middle of a farm field :X
