I listened to SAW85 for the first in a long time a few weeks back & truth told there was a lot of stuff that I thought sounded like it coulda been a digital synth running through some sweet analog filters & tape. Like, that one brassy vocally pad that's all over the place. Could been off one of them DX synths I bet

Of course we have no way of knowing for sure but I can tell by the lushness & having worked with many digipads in my day

edit: also it's not the gear that makes those tracks sound fresh it's the fact that they have BIG PIMPIN STYLE

In all fairness, a lot of journalists are too lazy to research facts by, for instance, asking the person they're writing about or anything like that. If you went by what the media said about me, you'd think I was a straight woman called Zoë Thomas who started making music on the Amiga. I can see how for someone with much more media attention, there'd be much more lazy research in the form of mis-quoted half-truths getting published.

Were you running it with true analogue cheese curds, known for their lush flavour & emotional depth, or that inferior process nonsense?

eh, as a journalist i must say - you always go with what sounds best. don't lie, but if the truth is boring, focus on the rumours and general public in some weird twist will turn it into facts.

as for rather unknown artists it's pretty normal to simply not care what the truth is, to be honest. i mean when you have interviews with wayn coyne and tom jenkinson lined up, it's hard to spend precious time fact-checking some band that appears as a blurb in some article and may or may not completely vanish by the time it goes in print. especially if you have, like, 20 minutes and the deadline hits. + there's editors etc. my last editor changed electronic music to electro in my machinedrum review because THERES NO SUCH THING AS ELECTRONIC MUSIC.

being a journalist is pretty fucking hard.

i hope you told him to fuck off and stick his job up his cunt.

also, being a journalist must suck.

but, i guess if you have a knack for writing then it must be pretty easy. - just write some shit and then get paid for it.

doesn't even have to be right or true!

lol, i actually did quit, mere two weeks ago. i toy with the idea of not writing ever again. journalism is great because you have shitloads of cool stuff going on, but on the other hand it literally kills the joy of listening to music. because with most other jobs it's 9 to 5 and you're free, but if you want to make a decent living out of writing it's literally 24/7 of keeping up with this and that and blah blah

yeah, i can imagine. that would really tire me out. and what if you don't like what you're supposed to be writing/reporting about?

and it must be expensive going out all the time to gigs n stuff......... (i mean if you're a music journo)

i guess it's not for the faint hearted.

Personally, I'm happier spending all my time doing things I love than I would be spending forty hours a week doing something I hate. More work, but better work, is a pretty good tradeoff in my opinion. If that's not for you, that's fine too, of course.

re: digital reverb in Aphex tracks

I have a theory about the reverb in some Analord tracks (klopjob, lisbon acid, etc). I think that maybe Rich directed the drum sounds through a speaker in a room of his studio and re-recorded them to include the natural reverb of that space. I don't know if that theory holds water, but I remember being unsettled by the reverb sounds in those tracks when I first heard them, it sounded like nothing I had heard before.

That is the theory that I have and which is mine and what it is, too.

well, actually, you get most of that shit for free. that's the neat part! but writing non-offensive things about stuff you loathe is awful. or doing interviews with them. gah.

I agree - that's what I always thought of whenever I heard that reverb. It's a brilliant idea, really. I've never heard anyone else do that (though I'm sure plenty have.)

but you still have to pay to travel there, surely? and pay for your own food and drinks, unless it's a free bar i guess...

Hasn't he said so much in interviews? I thought one of the reasons he lived in a disused bank was because of the acoustics and their reverb potential. Plus there's

of what appears to be the isolated synth string section and vocoded speech from Last Rushup 10 going through Yamaha rotary speakers, so if that's really the setup he used, he's not a stranger to acoustics... Not to mention all the background noises and conversations in so many of his tracks. I think that letting real life creep in like that is part of what makes his music so endearing.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop springs to mind, with their empty room reverb. Another fun one is to play the music at twice the regular speed in a bathtub, record the reverb from that, and slow it back down to normal speed again. That way, the music's at the normal speed but the reverb is half the speed it should be, making it seem bigger. I believe this was done in THX 1138, but I may well be misremembering it.

Basically, you don't need money, you need an active imagination and the ability to think laterally.

Everything can be a musical instrument, and an effect.

Spring reverb still makes me feel slightly nauseated, but it sounds so interesting I've sent off for one anyway... I'm not even sure how that works. I guess maybe my brain thinks that such a weird warping of sound means that I might have been drugged or something.
