ha! nice tip.

As a disclaimer I should probably say I haven't actually tried bathtub reverb yet, but I can vouch for making percussive sounds out of household objects. I used to do that back when I was about sixteen (I couldn't afford to sample real instruments and didn't know about sample CDs at the time), and I've gotten back into it again lately. For instance, hitting a baking tray with a knife and pitching it down a few octaves makes an awesome piledriver sound, especially if you do it a few times and layer them up in stereo with lots of reverb. An empty plastic milk carton makes a surprisingly good sound kind of a bit like a kick drum or floor tom. Scraping the smooth sides of two knives together, pitched down a few octaves, makes a nice sword sound. The kitchen is a treasure trove of percussive sounds, basically. (I like to think that if I was a guy, I'd have the confidence to go to a junk yard too and ask to just spend a few hours banging on random objects.) Oh, and I used a radiator too, quite recently, which was fun but didn't sound quite as good as I'd hoped it would, although I still ended up using it.

Exactly. If you have a weird idea, try it out. Experiment! Don't think about what your equipment's supposed to do, think about what it can do. Think about what else you can repurpose as an instrument or an effect.

i wasn't being sarcastic or anything, (just in case that's what you thought!)

I'm often quite bad at spotting sarcasm, so if anything err on the side of mistaking it for someone being literal. Don't worry, I didn't think you were being sarcastic. It is a nice tip. :D

you should just go to the junk yard anyway, gender stereotypes be damned!

It's not the stereotypes that worry me. (If they did, I wouldn't be a programmer or an electronic musician.) To get a good recording, I need no background noises, which means going when it's pretty much deserted, preferably at unsociable hours. I don't want to be near men where it's pretty much deserted, much less the kind that might work at junk yards. Basically, I wouldn't feel safe. It's the same reason my partner, who's very much into astronomy, doesn't go to the park at night to observe the stars. Even with the two of us, it's still not really safe.

Walking around by yourself late at night is a privilege men tend to take for granted, but a privilege nonetheless.

reminds me of when my friend and i were bushwalking through the blue mountains...i hit record on my H2 and instructed him to hit things that looked "soundy" with his walking stick, which resulted in about 40 minutes of various whacking noises which ended up in one of my tracks. i think we freaked out a few tourists, however.

When you're recording things that sound good, you look like an idiot, and it's completely worth it. I'm very much of the Feynman "what do you care what other people think?" philosophy. The last time we went camping (again, for astronomy) I took lots of recordings of various wildlife, and even a local steam train they had. Although I haven't yet found a use for them.
