If you need proof of the current industry-wide fascination with "weirdness" in rap music, you can't do much better than this. Sacramento punk-rap outfit Death Grips, who are best known for lo-fi, apocalyptic,
and lyrics like,
have signed a record deal with Epic, the major label home to artists like Fiona Apple and Natasha Bedingfield.

Death Grips plan to release two album with Epic this year to follow up last year's solid mixtape Exmilitary. The first, The Money Store, will be out on April 24 and includes the two most recent Death Grips tracks we've heard, "Blackjack" and "Get Got". (It'll also be available on vinyl April 21 as part of Record Store Day). The second album's called No Love and is scheduled for a fall release.

Suprised they signed to Epic, I guess they realised there's money in appealing to the hipster demographic? Anyway more Death Grips is always good news and by the sounds of Get Got, this could be amazing.

I just got the cd at the Refused show.

The tracks on the new album are all incredible. The only problem is... I think they mastered the CD poorly.

The sound is way to flat and erring on high end, over low end. Not enough bass, by far. It has a tinny sound.

It is there in the recording, just not in the mixing/mastering.

My theory is that now, they are with a major label and shit got fucked up. Ex-Military sounds way better.

I'm actually kinda sad about it. I really wouldn't even bring it up, but I was listening to it in my car on the way home and my car stereo is pretty decent. Bass on the radio usually sounds way bigger. I'm talking, even Van Halen.

If you get the album, don't get it on cd. Get it on LP or try getting a digital copy. My 2¢.

FYI, if you are going to cochella, they will have the vinyl LP there. There was some mix-up and they didn't have it at the Glass House show :(

For what it's worth there is a 10/10 review on Drowned in Sound

I look forward to drawing my own conclusions. I haven't listened to any leaks....

Best of 2012 so far without a doubt, for me at least. Snagged the vinyl this morning. sounds waaaay better than the digital. I mean records always do on vinyl, but you can really tell here.
