Oh yeah, I mean different formats work better for different styles, and physical is obviously in decline. But in the UK last year, SoundScan tracked over 50 million combined CD & vinyl sales, and that doesn't take into account smaller independents/DIY labels & stores, or second hand sales. 'Pretty much dead' doesn't come close.

Once again, UK SoundScan sales only, but 2016 was also the first year where purchased album downloads surpassed CDs. The death of the physical album, and the death of CD in particular, has been vastly over-reported in the media, who are desperate not to be caught out by emerging trends and happy to sack off anything old.

I found this (very) plausible inspiration that led to quaristice / quadrange graphics:
 the book Arte Programmata (Programmed Art) presents the graphic and theoretical work of Enzo Mari, exponent (with Bruno Munari) of the avant-garde aesthetic/designer group of Kinetic Art.

Not surprising when CDs on Amazon are often cheaper than MP3 downloads.
