Saw this om FACT this morning. Some uploads of very degraded digital copies of SAW II tracks. Supposed to be a casual homage to William Basinski. Nothing really special imo but it sounds kind of cool.

We've all see the threads about RDJ tracks at different speeds and heard things like the V/Vm remixes, but this is a bit different. Anyone else listened to glitched out or tape degraded Aphex Twin releases, unintentionally or intentionally?

Hmm, I'm certainly not discrediting the author but certainly the bit rot I've experienced on my discs doesn't sound like that. Maybe the results sound different with every CD player ...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

This.

Doesn't sound like bit rot to me at all. Sounds intentionally... affected.

Nah, you're a wee child who can't wait for official release. Embarrassing. Shove your privilege.

Even then it still sounds like shit. Far too close to the original sound. Apparently static-y noises and glitching the audio a bit makes for a proper remix these days... :cerious:

EDIT:

Maybe I'm a bit harsh to say it sounds like shit. I think it's pretty interesting and sounds okay, but as I said, it's way too close to the original to make me acknowledge it as anything more than an uncredited experiment, rather than riding on the coattails of SAW II to make yourself popular by crediting yourself to said experiment. But maybe it just looks that way since soundcloud automatically tags your name to your uploads...

I echo the guess that this might not be typical CD rot. According to his page: "From the CD rot of a 9 years old, Nashua CD-R copy of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume 2, played on a Sharp WQ-CH600."

Also, while it's kinda neat I wasn't blown away. The author doesn't appear to be making it more than it is, besides the Basinski mention. Not as pleasant as worn out tape artifacts either.

Isn't this how Markus Popp started out?

Pretty much. He did it on purpose (marking up CDs with felt pens) and edited the results with far more variation. He sampled Aphex as well, I started a thread about it years ago: http://forum.watmm.c...pinion-on-oval/

What's that photo about

skrillex hanging out with harmony korine, not sure why they're together here but it made me laugh how awkward they look.

Have a few cassette tapes where the previous recordings are still audable over the current ones... a very ghostly effect that gets me every time and sounds like the tow layers are in sync somehow. No afx though!

I have to agree with you. It does sound like shit and it's ok to be harsh about it. It's perfectly ok so say that static sounds like shit... it's basically ear shit. I mean.. I know some people like ear shit.. but as the universal truth goes... different stroke for different folks.

a lot of this hyped up conceptual stuff these days sounds better as a news headline that it actually does, and if you think about its not a very cool concept, especially if you consider that Basinksi's is more of a clever hoax than something that actually took place.

Thanks for doing my homework chassis lol.

it would be fun to stumble upon something like this at home with your own stuff. Listening to it on soundcloud is like hearing a "you had to be there" story

What a fucking miserable excuse for something interesting...

I regret even calling it "kinda interesting" I feel like I did this...

I was hoping some watmmers might mention hearing RDJ releases they owned that were similarly fucked up, regardless of format, and whether it sounded remotely neat. But it's a meh thread, even if it isn't jazz news or an appreciation topic that's been done already. srry d00ds

I think he's confused the word "humans" with the word "Americans". They really like to exaggerate shit. Dont think Ive ever described a sandwich as "awesome".

have been thinking about this alot lately. having been really into deepchord stuff a lot the last month or so,

kind of trying to figure out if the stylized tape hiss, distortion, deterioration etc has the artistic merit intended.

maybe its just like buying clothes that are pre vintaged. dooshee.but i think the deepchord guys got it right.

using the feild recordings to convey a different psychological flavor than just the music sound.

none of us are experts on anything really, who knows how this stuff effects our brains. i think the rot might work if done right to add a depth of relevance based on preceived value of age.

echo and reverb work the same way, making our brain think we are in a bigger space.

sounds trigger reactions.
