What bands should be signed by WARP?

As we had the recent discussion about WARP signing some rather mediocre acts recently what bands should be signed by WARP instead?

I'd like to see Loops Haunt get some worthy recognition...

They should drop Hudson Mohawke, since his debut EP his stuff's just gotten weaker and weaker...

Are you insinuating that Warp is the most superlative electronic label that an artist could hope to ever be signed to because that notion, in itself, is debatable.

I'm not even sure if one could have a single BEST electronic label in this day & age considering how much synth/sample/weird noise music has proliferated since the dawn of the internet, to the point that every single niche genre has a steady community of followers, producers, & people who insist nothing good has been produced in X number of years.

It would be the most eclectic label ever, attempting to release material showcasing the very best of everything from trance to noise drones to whatever you call it when people like OPN or VHS Head hyper-sample old 80s material (I half-suspect this genre evolved out of Youtube Poops). Most people, even if they really dug one artist, would hate the rest. Only the most worldly of music fans would be able to appreciate it all

That's the thing, those kind of labels seem to exist all over - very niche and (at least it appears at the moment) successful little labels that cater to some very experimental or at least specific styles and goals. Social media and the ease of streaming and distribution via bandcamp or, say, limited cassette and vinyl runs seems popular as well. Like you've said, it's hard for a "big" label to dominate when the novelty of hand-picking and curating a diverse and impressive artist list from small obscure labels or self-releasing musicians is no longer relevant. People don't need to pick and choose their labels to follow when they can use lastfm recommendations, follow facebook and twitter feeds, and tailor their soundcloud friends as they wish.

The idea of the most epic and eclectic label makes me think of not labels but media: sites like altered zones

Warp seems to be picking artists willing to stick with them and who will likewise "guarantee" decent sales. They've ditched being a label easily described in terms or style. It's like the beat scene/wonky equivalent to Warp or Rephlex's IDM or braindance sound respectively.

Dropping an association with one genre seems to be the way to go. Planet Mu transitioned from IDM and breakcore and now dabbles in bass, footwork, even chillwave sounding acts. Ninja Tune appears to finally shake off it's long-held dominance of downtempo/trip-hop by releasing albums by Lorn, Slugabed, FaltyDL, Eskmo. And again, so many artists appear to bounce between many of the labels I've mentioned above. Perhaps the long-term contracts aren't even a thing anymore.

I could see that happening - they have quite a following, somewhat well known, lot of genre overlap. I don't think they need to though.

Warp doesn't need to sign anyone new - rather, they need to focus on putting out more music by the artists we all already know and love on their roster.

I think we should all let go of the 'artists we all already know and love'—they'll never be as good as they were. Even if they continue to innovate and try new things (as is the case with Squarepusher and Autechre) the fanboys won't be into it.

They should sign pselodux.

if they were still a decent label they would have signed ceephax, venetian snares, cygnus, mitch murder

if warp started as a new company in 2002 and people judged them only on what was released since then... nobody would give a shit

but what if all these mediocre acts made a release like oversteps possible? If warp went into hiatus with the old roaster and started signing bands just for the sake of it and not for money they would have died by now

yeah, probably. they should do this first and try to redeem themselves a bit ...

but they'd have to put out new releases by everyone i mentioned above before they even get half way back to redeeming themselves.

ok, actually, if they did do that then that would be utterly amazing and everyone would forgive them for the last 7 years in an instant, probably.

let's sweep this awful chapter under the carpet! and get back to putting out good electronic music.

all the featured artists should just pair up to collaborate with each other and then form new bands with new names and new music.

hmmm, yeah you're right. people don't need labels anymore, unless you actually want to have something physical manufactured and put out for you in large amounts and have all your promo work done for you, etc. and then get paid for it. :)

but yeah, most people can just use bandcamp these days, innit.
