wtf. this is some artsy fartsy shit right here.

not saying i don't like it, but... i'm just saying i might not get it. there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to latch on to, for me.

i like when i don't understand something, because then it is mysterious. i like mysteries.

wtf.

edit: has anyone made a comment about Scott Walker being the new Jandek yet? because that's the vibe i got so far. i'm already warming up to it, though. i like Epizootics...

luke, i'd do the chronological thing. maybe not climate of hunter cos some of it is a bit dated, but the scott tracks on the walker brothers' 'nite flights', then 'tilt', then 'the drift', then this.

it takes a small bit of work to get into the scott mindset, but it's worth it.

the whole of zercon seems to be made up of one- or two-line cheesy standup comic zingers.

pretty sure that's zercon trying to amuse the crowd.

i'm waiting to see the CD appear somewhere because I do -not- want to be without the lyrics for this one.

I did a listen with the lyric book yesterday actually. It does really help, in fact I think that's what you're supposed to do. It really helps with a track like Zercon.

for contrast, a typically terrible pitchfork review

although david toop interviewing scott sounds like an interesting prospect: http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/9003-scott-walker/

as I am a pretentious git who reads the Wire this is what he said in an interview: that his greatest fear about it is people just downloading it off iTunes and not having the lyrics to go on.

Pitchfork: I wondered if these insults were a reflection of all of the insults that have been directed at you over the years.

SW: [laughs] Well, it's been pretty rough at times, but not quite that bad. [On the song "SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, a Flagpole Sitter)"], it was just an idea, because he is a comedian. It's just the idea that he is being heckled by silence. He's being pestered and made to feel guilty. Silence of course is where everything originates from.

I got that edition of the Wire. I don't really bother with any music press usually but an interview with Scott is always worth reading.

I think it makes sense what he said about having them to hand. His songs tend to be very word heavy and it is nice to have a reference. They are also good to read when you don't have the music to hand as well, they stand up very well on their own.

i unsubscribed from wire about two years ago but i think i need to get that one.

in terms of actual -sound- this is about as far away from Jandek as you could ever get.
