Also, no Radiohead either, but that's understandable

I bet Thom was secretly hoping to be asked so he could say something official like "yeah, urm, too many footprints of carbon emissions and, uhh, soda companies- Tibets not even ther, ya no, just let Bono do it"

Also, anyone watching the NBC coverage here them during Angola's part in the parade of nations? Lauer and Costas said the country named, paused awkwardly, then talked about the 1992 Dream Team kicked their ass in basketball, laughed, mentioned Charles Barkley elbowed a guy, laughed again, and THAT WAS IT! Hell, if they had discussed the nation's history of civil war and human rights massacres it would of been less offensive.

Also, that hilarious NHS plug and the inclusion of the Beatles and Darwin and not, say, Churchill and Thatcher, is bound to give conservative talk radio in the States about 3-4 days of "liberal media bias" material to bitch about.

I'm OUTRAGED SHOCKED and APPALLED that the chuckle brothersdin't light the torch.

Well that was the most misguided, inappropriate, turgid crock of fervent nationalistic wank since the Nuremberg rallies.

Umbrellas, Paul McCartney, James Bond, Mr Bean and the royal family - one cliche after another. So the point of the opening cerimony was to reinforce stereotypes about britain in the most lavish way possible? They could've done so much better, that was a waste of time and money.

Honestly, it could have been a lot worse. I hated how everything was bathed in blue light though. What is this, fucking x-factor?

In a few years time that'l look super dated and tacky.

yeah, i don't get the hate (apart from the usual problem of every cunt being a critic these days and thinking everything is "shit" because it's the thing people believe they are expected to say in today's fucked up world). but anyway, it was the opening ceremony of a worldwide sporting event - of course it was going to be full of clichés and stereotypes! what's so wrong with that? i think it was really well done - dynamic and interesting to watch, funny in places (bond & HM the Q was wicked). i mean, nothing went wrong, it was performed brilliantly by the participants, the crowd appeared to be loving it and having a great time, it was spectacular and full of energy...i could go on. the only thing i didn't like was the fact they wheeled out macca yet again. i fucking hate macca.

he's recognised the world over though, that's why innit. i thought that bit was alright anyway - nice bit of universal gentle humour everyone could understand and that, nothing wrong with it really.

Mr. Bean, you guys.

You know your ceremony is bad when Mr.Bean is the best part of the whole thing.

AND NO APHEX TWIN?! SHAME ON THEM!!

Mr. Bean was there? Damn I missed it! I didn't know the ceremonies was yesterday until late last night when I saw someone post that Underworld was performing. But I looked at the time posted and it was 2 hours ago.

This. How anyone could mistake this for a remotely "left-wing" event is beyond me.

I think perhaps, you shouldn't over complicate things when making these types of spectacles, as your vision will be lost.

A member of the non sequitairiate.

If they really wanted to represent Britain the should have just got an man in some some muddy overalls to drive in on a tractor and shout "its the olympics! blood foreigners." And then get on with it.

They could get some chavs to light the torch, they like burning stuff.

I liked it. And as I'm almost certainly the most well educated person on here, whilst simultaneously having impeccable working class hero credentials, you shouldn't take that opinion lightly. I do hope mccartney dies soon though.

Same to you too :spiteful:

Sincere question.

Did any of you Brits actually feel that this opening ceremony embodied anything of what is is to be "British"?

I honestly enjoyed watching the Olympic countries' procession part the best.

This really made me feel like the Beijing (however surreal and absurd) blew this one away. Tough act to follow, I guess.
