Joyrex, how do you even like things like this when you named the forum after the Caustic Window version of We Are the Music Makers?

I think Owl City lists Boards of Canada and Prefuse 73 as influences.

It is sad how dubstep is now a curse word. :( Especially when things like Skream and Horsepower Productions exist.

It was 2011 when I had a huge personal crisis realizing the genre I loved was essentially dead, it's corpse used to create the monster that is "dubstep" now and forever in popular culture. I couldn't say I liked dubstep to my friends with decent music taste who hated it (skrillex, nero, excision, datsik, etc) and I couldn't say I liked dubstep to my friends who LOVE skrillex and brostep. Beyond other dubstep heads of years past and fellow electronic music listeners, the conversation is a non-starter. It's futile, so I gave up. I listen to future garage and bass music that the original dubstep legends make now. It's liberating not being pissed off at how it all went down. People are dumb and many listen to bad music, but meh, who cares. Life's to short to rant and bitch about that.

Which has nothing to do why I listed his upcoming release here - I like OC, and others here might (secretly) like it as well - and who knows - with an new album, an artist has a chance to gain new fans, especially if they go in a new direction with their music.

I actually met the guy at a party around the cities before he really blew up, he's from Coon Rapids, MN... such an obnoxious cunt, talked himself up all night whenever music came up. His music is so gay it makes Bieber look ballsy.

So that's a bad thing?

It's just uncomfortable to listen to unless you're a teenage girl or an effeminate gay dude. That's all. The lyrics, his style of singing / tone of voice, and the instrumentation are all so soft and safe sounding.

So you would say that effeminate gay dudes generally listen to soft and safe sounding instrumentation?

I just meant that tastes are tastes, and just because you like one thing doesn't mean you have to hate another. Most of the time.

Somebody's rainbow's a little sensitive eh?

You're only taking part of what I said... Taluhid expanded on pretty much what I meant. His music is so femme in a bubblegum & flowers (and fireflies) kinda way that unless you are a teenage girl or an effeminate male (the type that tend to be gay), then yeah it's a little weird listening to his shitty music.

Not exclusively, but yeah, effeminate gay dudes seem to like a lot of perky pop and dance music. I happen to think that music sounds safe. There's a reason why house music is and has been associated with gay culture. One of my best friends is gay, and he and his gay friends that I've met, like Owl City, Lady Gaga, Kaskade, The Naked and Famous, etc. A family friend, who is not a "stereotypical" gay guy, had to accompany his boyfriend to a Britney Spears concert at one point. It's not a bad thing at all, I'm just stating what seems to be a trend, and thus who is most likely going to enjoy this music. Of course this isn't going to apply to everyone.

My guilty pleasure is listening to some sweet sweet RnB! R.Kelly, Tweet, Mario, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, Issyss, Aaliyah... I aint clickin' that owl city though!

I thought he was from Owatonna, MN. Was a senior in highschool in the neighboring town, and when Fireflies was popular it was quite inescapable. The people in the surrounding area had some sort of pride that this music came out of the area.

Gowl Shitty-- I mean Owl City makes offensively inoffensive music, but that's no reason to let this thread derail into homophobia.

Says the guy who makes music, but is unsigned, etc.

Also, Owl City is (apparently) a devout Christian, and you can easily find obvious religious references in his music/lyrics, so I find it laughably ironic that his music is apparently "for teh gayz". What a load of crap.
