Owl City - The Midsummer Station

I don't even care if Owl City sounds gay, straight, soft, hardcore, or anything. What I really hate is that it's a total and complete rip-off of The Postal Service's sound (a bit more effeminiate) and he's making bank from it. You could say it's not The Postal Service's fault they never made more than one album. But it's not like I'm sympathizing with TPS or anything. I just don't like rip-off artists.

Not to mention one Postal Service album was actually enough, and it was good in 2003-2004.

Unsigned doesn't = shitty though!

Oh, of course not - I wasn't implying his music is bad, by no means it's not - just a bit odd to slag off Owl City for having moderate success as a musician...

I've heard that comparison - if anything, it's a continuation and variation on a particular sound, and probably not one The Postal Service should be credited for inventing to begin with. I've heard other artists with similar sounds going back to the 80's, so really it's just his take on synthpop.

Now, if I'm missing where he shamelessly rips off distinct beats and sounds, that's another story, but I haven't heard it myself.

It's primarily his voice and singing style. Add that to the synthpop/indie electronic music and you're got TPS. Granted Owl City has taken it more pop, the vocals are a complete copy. I mean, minus the sincerity of course.

Appreciated Joyrex, but I'm not slagging off his music because of his success (Hell, good for him I guess). I mentioned though I've met the guy and didn't get along with him, and I just don't care for his music it's too soft for me.

Oh, you actually met him? Interesting. Always a unique perspective you'll get when you meet the person behind the music... sometimes it's what you expect, sometimes, not.

People wouldn't hate him nearly as much if he didn't lean so hard into his 'r's. That is what grates me, just the whitest pronunciation possible aghh!

I tried to talk to him a few weeks ago after a concert, but I only got to talk to the guitarist because he was too busy talking to some hot chick with whom he disappeared afterwards.

I like how the same people who sometimes get accused of being "sick paedophiles" for listening to Venetian Snares and Boards of Canada are now accusing people of being gay/effeminate for liking Owl City.

If I heard this and was told it's a Postal Service album I would believe it without doubt.

Well It's a complete rip-off but must admit he managed to sound exactly as The Postal Service.
