Helm compiled a great primer on some of his favorite drone records. Here's a youtube playlist

. The new Helm album on PAN is super too, but maybe a bit too busy to file under drone ?!

the new helm album is fantastic, drone or not.

thanks for the link too; that andrew chalk track in particular is great.

Great post. Daniel Menche has been busy putting up a lot of great stuff from his back catalog on bandcamp recently. Discovered this one gem in particular with massive cello and horn drones. Mastered at an extremely high volume, Merzbow style.

Also want to recommend Amazing Daze by Marcus Schmickler & Hayden Chisholm. The title piece is a tribute to Phil Niblock and the other one to Bjork. Can't find the studio version of the album but here's a clip of them playing the Phil Niblock tribute live. Bagpipe cacophony included. Full Album Review.

There are so many different flavors of drone, it might be difficult to make a recommendation. Maybe it's just that I lack the vocabulary, or that are so many sub-genres for this category of music but I can safely say that I'm a fan of the ambient / drone, yet i can't say that I'm too keen on any of the artists mentioned in this thread. I prefer synth-heavy, euphoric and other-worldly drone / ambient music and ordinarily prefer that my drone is free of the conventions and formula of pop or rock&roll music (drums & guitars). Some of my favorites are Oneohtrix Point Never, Loscil, Pulse Emitter, Tim Hecker, Emeralds, The Caretaker, William Basinski, Marble Sky, Belong (October Language). Anyone else into this kind of drone?

Pulse Emitter's meditative music series definitely gets my stamp of approval. Freely available online.

Sounds a bit like you don't like drone.

Edit: That probably sounds rude when it wasn't meant to be. :flower:

somafm.com has several stations that play drone music - might be a good way to discover new drone artists you might not have heard of before (plus the iOS app has a song bookmarking feature so you can go look them up later)

Deerhunter's Cryptograms has elements of drone throughout, in addition to a couple of drone tracks.

V/vm's Death of Rave (The Source) is hands down my favorite drone album. And you can find it free here: http://5-against-4.b...th-of-rave.html

Note to mods: V/vm doesn't care if you download it for free.

In my opinion, the difference between ambient and drone is that there is almost never a break in sound in drone, while there is in ambient. I would call Aphex Twin's "Parallel Lines" on Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 a drone track while "Rhubarb" and "Radiator" are ambient.

Though, when I hear "Stone in Focus" I think of it as droney. So I don't know.

Ooh, it's like a prototype version of his Caretaker & Leyland Kirby work. I couldn't actually get the links to work anyway so looked some up on yertubes.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

May have taken them down. I wager it was quite a bit of memory to keep in one place.

If I'm recalling correctly, I believe the Death of Rave series came after quite a bit of his Caretaker stuff.

This the highlight in my opinion. Been throwin' this video around these parts left and right.

So what's the WATMM consensus regarding OPN being/not being drone? His tracks (specifically the ones on Rifts) are in a weird spot for me because when I first start listening to one my mind treats the arpeggios as conventional melodic rhythms but over the course of a few minutes the dense repetition causes them to blur into a very textural harmonic drone
