There are certainly Pink Floyd threads around here, but here goes a new one for the present year.

I have fallen in love with the band when i first heard The Dark Side of the Moon, which i guess happens to pretty much everyone with my age, then started exploring their whole discography. Even though i prefer the post-Syd Barrett era, it is the rock band whose body of work i love entirely, and it is probably because it is so diverse and explores mundane, yet timeless, concepts.

I particularly love their longer, trippy sound explorations, like Atom Heart Mother, that always reminds me of warm summer afternoons in the country, Echoes, specially the live version they played at Pompeii, in the early 70's, or Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and the way Floyd show so poetically how they miss their old friend.

Their records from the 80's on, like A Momentary Lapse of Reason or The Division Bell, don't really touch me. They lack that element of surprise that only the Floyd could offer. They either lack the intercalated moments of silence that the band knew how to master so perfectly in The Dark Side, or have too much echoed Gilmour guitar stuff. They also aren't based on strong concepts as they were before, curiously before Waters left.

I guess Pink Floyd are a bit like Kraftwerk, even though not in the same scale. They were so ahead of their time, that eventually they had to be caught by it, and that's when they stopped making the best experiments with sound that gave them musical hero status.

I have read some stupid stuff about fights between Gilmour and Waters that let me down a bit, but i guess all bands with old guys go trough that at some point.

Pink Floyd are my favorite rock band ever, and among my most favorite musicians.

HUGE fan here. My faves are Piper At The Gates of Dawn and Wish You Were Here.

It's almost a dead tie (for the exact opposite reasons), but I think WYWH may win by a nose.

It's such a personal, intimate feeling album. Also, there aren't as many lyrics, but when there are, they are very poingiant.

PATGOD, to me, is basically the encapulization of the magic of the 60s. It's whimsical, childlike, innocent, experimental and horrific. I also think it paved a lot of ground for a lot of my favorite artists to follow.

I'm a huge Barrett fan, too. Piper is him at the height of his powers and trajectory. The album has a distinct tragic attachment when you know how Barrett's abilities were dulled by madness in the following years.

I love all of their stuff, but those two are the most worth talking about, to me.

I loved them for a while, then got kinda burned out on them I guess. However, a friend recently bought me a vinyl copy of A Momentary Lapse of Reason (which I hadn't heard before), and it's actually become my favourite album of theirs. Probably more because of Tony Levin's bass playing than anything else though.

I should probably re-visit the 70s stuff actually.

Words cannot say enough about them for me. Of course, I'm only in for the ride until Roger left, and I'm not a huge fan of the Barrett years, beyond a couple songs here and there ("Remember A Day" comes to mind, as does "Bike"). Have actually been on a big Floyd kick since getting the Immersion box set reissue of Dark Side for Xmas last year from my wife. My current fixation are the 1970 shows in San Francisco and Saint Tropez, France. Incredible stuff:

I went through a huge Floyd phase, for the years from 14 years old to about 16 I played nothing but Pink Floyd. Before school and after school and all weekend. I was obsessed with them tbh and the obsession continued until my mid twenties. I think I played them too much and don't really get great urges to play them much anymore. I overdosed on them I them I think lol.

Back then I was addicted to The Wall, themes of alienation suited me to a tee. I also loved Animals, Wish You Were Here and of course DSOTM. I also loved their early albums like Meddle and Obscured By Clouds. I never really like Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Atom Heart Mother.

Nowadays if I plumb for The Floyd it woud be Wish You Were Here or Meddle. I still to this day love this beautiful track from Meddle.

well I liked Gn' R for a few months until I heard Season in the Abyss, and that was the end of GnR for me. You're right me and jefferoo do have similar almost identical tastes in music (and Jules).

Haven't checked too much of Floyd's live stuff, besides the Pompeii film, which i was a kind of enlightement to the power of the song Echoes.

Any live show recommendations, especially the 70's era, after DSOFM?

Also, glad to see so much Floyd love around here, but i was already expecting that.

Love Ummagumma. Reminds me of being lost in the country both at day and night.

This one is so trippy

I'm a huge Floyd fan, everything through Wish You Were Here in particular. I actually started listening to the Wall recently with far more interest and enjoyment than I had in the past. Pink Floyd was on a few bands my dad loved in particular but what really made me a fan was their discography beyond their more popular output. They had all the membership drama, overwrought tours and concept albums, loyal and bias fanbase, etc and yet still produce and write innovative music first and foremost. They're like the Beatles or Rolling Stones without as much of the pop culture zeitgeist attached to them as a group - perhaps that's indicative of the 70s in general, but I dunno, perhaps that's why they're remained so accessible without any notable "pop" singles or albums. Unlike other prog, metal, experimental, psychedelic, etc groups they've been fairly mainstream...at least in a way that people know who they are. I remember being in a health class in high school with a lot of stoners, soon-to-be-drop out gangbangers, and few random preppie kids, and I randomly found out a them were Pink Floyd fans when I brought out my CD player to listen to Dark Side.

Agreed.

The Dark Side of The Moon is the pop album of my dreams. Just listen to the lyrics of Breathe

Breathe, breathe in the air

Don't be afraid to care

Leave but don't leave me

Look around, choose your own ground

I remember Waters talking about this same thing in a documentary about Floyd i recently watched. It's almost like a teenage song, as he himself says.

I remember you talking about this earlier, but still haven't tried.

How does it work? Album + movie from the begining?
