I have to give a little light on Saucerful of Secrets.

This song guts me.

I know a lot of you guys say you don't get into the Barrett-era stuff, but you gotta go back and give it all another shot.

I think this may be one of the group's most special moments.

It's the last song on their last LP with Syd. The lyrics are so sad.

It took me a while to get into the Barrett era stuff, and even though i prefer the post Barrett era like i said earlier, i love Pink Floyd's body of work as a whole.

And this must have a been a special moment for them, seeing how sad they got after Barrett started getting mad. I mean, Wish You Were Here is about that sadness, above all. An entire record dedicated to Syd.

This song is arguably Barrett's crowning achievement.

I love it.

I also love that whoever posted it included a bunch of rare, early photos of the band from their happiest (and hippiest) days.

i'm a huge fan of pink floyd, too.

meddle (echoes is hauntingly beautiful) and dark side of the moon are my favourite albums, but i think everything after the wall is quite bad (the division bell is quite ok).

i like their early albums too, a saucerful of secrets is great because there is "set the controls for the heart of the sun" on it.

This. Set the Controls is one of my fave Floyd songs. Live versions are awesome too.

I went through a huge Floyd phase, for the years from 14 years old to about 16 I played nothing but Pink Floyd. Before school and after school and all weekend. I was obsessed with them tbh and the obsession continued until my mid twenties. I think I played them too much and don't really get great urges to play them much anymore. I overdosed on them I them I think lol.

Back then I was addicted to The Wall, themes of alienation suited me to a tee. I also loved Animals, Wish You Were Here and of course DSOTM. I also loved their early albums like Meddle and Obscured By Clouds. I never really like Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Atom Heart Mother.

Nowadays if I plumb for The Floyd it woud be Wish You Were Here or Meddle. I still to this day love this beautiful track from Meddle.

meddle is my favorite and this is my favorite track off it, good post

getting into Floyd is a right of passage as a teen. I was hugely into them. I made an audio cassette version of the wall from my tape deck hooked into my VCR just so I could have when the tigers broke free. even got to see them on the division bell tour in 94.

set the controls used to be one of my fav tracks of em, but now i don't dig it that much, that one, and the ones that have a temper of hippie acid tribal transcendental a bit like the doors in the end...

Me too and me too. That is hilarious!

I also wanted to have the film recording of "In The Flesh" on tape.

That concert was fucking fantastic, btw.

I was kind of reared on Pink Floyd, my bro was a fan when I was growing up in the 70s. I even remember posing so he could draw my ear once, a la Meddle. I love the title track from Saucerful of Secrets, especially when that drum loop kicks in after about 4 minutes, blew my mind the first time I heard it. Much prefer the older stuff, especially Meddle and Atom Heart Mother (released around the week I was born, along with Zep III). And as for Syd, I think there are maybe one or two tracks on Piper I don't love.

Incidentally, any love for the Barrett solo albums? Some beautifual tuneage in there.

I too went through a big phase of listening to them when I was 17-19 and (surprise) just starting to smoke weed. I don't listen to them much any more, but Meddle remains my favorite and it's an album that will always hold a supremely special place in my heart. Echoes is mindblowing.

Ummagumma is really fun too. I liked The Wall for a while but now I kind of hate it. That one is definitely their most falsely praised album. It has a few good tracks, but so much whiny nonsense filler.

I'm a huge Floyd fan, everything through Wish You Were Here in particular. I actually started listening to the Wall recently with far more interest and enjoyment than I had in the past. Pink Floyd was on a few bands my dad loved in particular but what really made me a fan was their discography beyond their more popular output. They had all the membership drama, overwrought tours and concept albums, loyal and bias fanbase, etc and yet still produce and write innovative music first and foremost. They're like the Beatles or Rolling Stones without as much of the pop culture zeitgeist attached to them as a group - perhaps that's indicative of the 70s in general, but I dunno, perhaps that's why they're remained so accessible without any notable "pop" singles or albums. Unlike other prog, metal, experimental, psychedelic, etc groups they've been fairly mainstream...at least in a way that people know who they are. I remember being in a health class in high school with a lot of stoners, soon-to-be-drop out gangbangers, and few random preppie kids, and I randomly found out a them were Pink Floyd fans when I brought out my CD player to listen to Dark Side.

Agreed.

The Dark Side of The Moon is the pop album of my dreams. Just listen to the lyrics of Breathe

Breathe, breathe in the air

Don't be afraid to care

Leave but don't leave me

Look around, choose your own ground

These lyrics are from Breathe Reprise, and I love them. They almost send shivers down my spine when I hear them.

Home, home again.

I like to be here when I can.

When I come home cold and tired

It's good to warm my bones beside the fire.

Far away across the field

The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees

To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

Agreed on Ummagumma being a fun album, plenty of ideas floating around and the band eschewing the idea of a conventional album with the solo stuff. Atom Heart Mother is similar I suppose, one half of it Pink Floyd and the other comprised of solo tracks. Sort of thing you might expect a group to do prior to splitting up (like The Beatles with the white album) rather than when they're about to become massive.

From what i have gathered around the web, Atom Heart Mother is generally not that much praised, and sometimes considered to be the 'worst Floyd album ever'.

I can't agree with this.

The side A track is pretty mindblowing. The begining is so weird/funny/trippy. I love the moment, somewhere in the middle, when the mood suddenly changes, and Gilmour drops the guitar jam. Such a warm, laid back sound that goes on from that moment

On this album one can hear plenty of ideas that the band would come to explore after...

I love them all. Obviously, Madcap Laughs is the best. I honestly like that one and Barrett more that the Pink Floyd albums from that era. Obscured By Clouds and Meddle are amazing, but Syds solo stuff is raw, beautiful and completely lacking any pretense. Also, didn't Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters do a bunch of session work on "Barrett"? I know Gilmour did, for sure.

I'd like to suggest, however, if any of you plan to pick up any Barrett albums, just avoid the ones with the alternate takes. When I was at the height of my Barrett obsession, they released those and it actually made me sad to hear them. I think the albums are very strong, without.

I was thinking of starting a thread about the Floyd actually. I am too nervous to post threads for the most part though, so I am glad this came up.

I have to say that they are without doubt one of my favourite bands. I have been listening to them since my childhood. I remember them hearing them in the car with my parents when I was five or six years old. As I have grown up their songs have revealed more and more to me as time has gone on. It is quite a testament to the music that considering I have been listening to their stuff for a very long time I'm still not bored of it.

I pretty much love everything they did up until Roger Waters left. I found it all very wishy washy after that. They seemed to lack any sort of vigour after that. I find it very difficult to choose which album I like the most. There are so many things to love about it all. The ones I listen to the most are Wish You Were Here and Animals. I find Animals to be perhaps a little underrated, I may be wrong there. But seriously...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bqZFp7dWbg

Totally fucking sublime! Dogs is a particular highlight for me. I love Animals because lyrically it pulls no punches, it's music is also a bit rawer (Stripped back is probably a better description) Maybe that's why it isn't rated highly. I'm glad to see there is some love for it here all the same. Wish You Were Here is the album I listen to the most of theirs. Musically I think it's the best thing I think they ever did. As ruiagnelo said I think Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a large part of that. It is generally one of my favourite pieces of music but the second half in particular blows my mind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1i-RKqOFxQ

I love the opening to the second half but I think the most special bit is from 19:46 in the video I posted. Particular the really slow bit. There isn't much I can say to do it justice. I think it speaks very well for itself. I would however like at this point to say that the other highlight of the album is Welcome To The Machine.

As for the Syd Barrett era of the band, I love all of it. Although I have a major soft spot for this.

It's just brilliant. Got banned by the pirate stations at the time for being smutty. The video is fun as well. I really do enjoy the albums to a certain degree. I have to be in the mood though as it can make me feel uncomfortable listening to them.

huge huge huge Floyd fan, very tempted to say my favorite band ever...and not afraid to proclaim DSOTM as the greatest album of all time

to those not so fond on the Barret era: Saucerfull of Secrets is an absolute gem of an album! I'm still not to fond of PATGOD, but Saucerfull is fantastic

@Jefferoo - yeees, Jugband blues is rather sad indeed - made more so when I watched a docu about Barrets time with floyd - at the time of Saucerfull of Secrets Barret was at an all time low in terms of his communication with the group and his Acid abuse - Jugband blues was a fitting last track to the album considering it was the last song he worked on with the group - they painted a heart wrenching image of Barret singing the final verse of the song alone in the studio, the lyrics being a small window into his mind and it almost being a cry for help

*edit*

yes, also wanted to say how I too am not a huge fan of the later years of Floyd - by which i would set my cut off point at Animals - really not a fan of the Wall, nor have I yet to appreciate the 2 albums they did without Waters

lastly - I was at the Waters Dark side of the moon tour a few years back - probably the best concert i've ever been to
