I can't claim to understand Draft, even after all this time. But I do remember when it first dropped a month before I graduated from high school. Blasting 6ie.cr in the final weeks of my senior year from the tape deck of the shitty 1991 Ford Probe I was driving at the time...irreplaceable.

I always interpreted it as a sudden change in the album flow. Coming off the end of Surripere, it feels like an abrupt tonal shift. It's like a ray of light suddenly shining through to me, a moment of clarity

They've had different eras IMO and the stretch from LP5 -> Untilted is my favorite. Although of course I like a lot of the stuff on either side of that too.

Didn't it come out in april? I was also in grade 12, I picked up the cd on my way home from having my wisdom teeth removed. Early listens were high on painkillers (and/or in pain) lol

I don't really think picking a favourite is possible with autechre.
Your original question was whether draft was "the best autechre", and imo "best" doesn't necessarily mean favourite, ie someone might have a favourite album but recognize it is flawed and may see other work as higher "quality" but not love it as much. Especially with an act like autechre lol. Technically everything they put out is their "best" because they just keep leveling up their skill. Draft might be considered the pinnacle of the direction they were heading in at the time, I'll give it that.

It’s hard for me to say which Autechre album is my favourite!
