The Wire's review of Exai is up.

Matthew Ingram reviews, shame they didn't get another writer to do it (Derek Walmsley or Philip Sherbourne, perhaps)...

Anyway I most agree with his review, also the turning away from the hyper formalist early 2000's stuff to something more MORE.

I think that stuff is more interesting than Exai, though, I include Oversteps as one of those. Exai feels more like the brainless fun and audio porn side of ae. The structures and compositions of tracks like LCC, Uviol, Pen Expers, ilanders, os veix3, maphive, tewe and numerous others sort of kick the tracks on Exai's ass. Exai still has cool compositions, but it's different somehow. Maybe a tad less original, at least on the ae scale, should there be one. I must say there's nothing wrong with that, I still really like it. It's pretty crazy, but it feels to me more obvious maybe. I may have chosen all the keywords incorrectly here, it's hard to describe.

Edit: Oh and, I like the sounds and atmosphere of certain tracks the best of all aspects on the album.

Fuck that guy. Confield is better than all musique concrete ever existed. Anyway it's absurd to call out Ae by still praising that lab's stuff, the creator of which, Pierre Schaeffer, publicly said near death that he wasted his whole life searching for anything outside the seven notes. There's nothing there, he said. It was one of the most powerful existential statements of the century in music.

So I'm going to get higher than I've been in at least 3 months tonight and take a walk in the snowy woods at night and listen to Exai. Might be fun, might be terrifying, might be both. Will certainly be dark as all hell. I'm so psyched.

My version of tripping on psychedelics since I can't even think about handling mush or cid anymore.

so the voice in deco Loc is saying "Fuck the System"? Sounds like it to me...

No, it was saying "This is IDM" or "Dick's, Eat em" but I can't tell which

shit I thought it said something about a bowl of crisps in your eyes

I wasn't being glib though, doesn't it sound like "system...system...fuk....system"?

I'll get my hat.

and yeah bad Wire review is bad. Funny how much his dislike of ae shines through.

and very good post coax, I agree this is like the audio porn side of ae. I think I've already burned out on it. But it was certainly fun.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

So that guy didnt even really get into reviewing Exai until like the 11th of 15 paragraphs, and then he said dubstep.

Seriously, fuck that guy.

my third listen in...and i have a severe case of 'this god damn motherfucker sounds so familiar' on many tracks as sif like autechre are quoting themselfs or somfing...i didnt have this feelings at first....i have had a few alcomohoic beverages though....adn the first couple of tracks are not as jarringly chaotic as i first thought they were on thirst listerine. beach.

I think the review is a bit dumb regarding the abstract electronic music (farmermanual, oval, autechre) of late 90s / early 2000s. Sure it didnt have loads of melodies, it was abstract & a bit noisey, But the passion for "fresh" (at that time) computerish processes (max:msp etc) was pretty important in the creative process of those artists. Many records from that time still sounds fucking good (endless summer, ovalcommers, confield) & saying its not as powerfull as sound master François Bayle is like comparing Nirvana/pixies/my bloody valentine to the Jimy Hendrix experience...

I get some serious Garbage EP vibes, everytime I listen to bladelores. It also, for some reason, kind of reminds of the Skeng remix they did.
