Max/MSP/ Pure Data / SuperCollider / ChucK

From my own experience, puredata extended would be the best to start with. It combines regular puredata with enough user-created content to stand up to Max. It's just not nearly as pretty and patches can get really messy fast if you don't plan ahead and encapsulate.

I recommend doing the "Loadbang" tutorial book (http://www.pd-tutorial.com/). It skips some of the theory but you slowly build your own beginner set of tools and modules as you learn the basics.

i'm lacking in asperger's thinking but i have plenty of poop ;)

i asked ae in the aaa thread if they can name some interesting composers/programmers and they also couldn't. i thing it was sean who said that those guys mostly work on universities and that they just push some stupid methods caring less for music per se.

yea dunno lol, don't know any either... I guess a lot of people who are into programming audio/dsp/sequencers etc. end up building instruments, commercial or not...

personally I find the act of programming, analysing & designing data & processes fascinating by itself and my musical output has been losing importance relative to it. but i don't see this as a bad thing tbh..

thats why i went for cdp. it had a simple plug your sample in and here the results approach with a very academic sound. but then they fucked it up with the interface and the shit documentation. always a fly in the ointment
