Films Recently Watched

I finally watched Horodotory. quite good. the title deceives the viewer into thinking one thing while the ending reveals a completely other thing.

disobedience - a woman who abandoned her british orthodox jewish community returns to attend her rabbi dad's wake and meets her friend who she lesbianed with back in teenage years, passions reignite. pretty hot on paper but besides one decent slime swap scene there wasn't anything really exciting or interesting going on. just pleasant but dull aesthetics with gentle score that replace actual content and depth. everyone already gets that religious people and their rules are fucked up, but there's a method to their madness that's still interesting to explore and to portray. besides the visuals the film didn't really bother to delve into this mode of existence, the character that stayed back doesn't pass for a deeply religious person for a second. basically film isn't bothered with that stuff and is quite content with the vapid "religious repression - bad! freedom - good!" statement.

unsane - a woman accidentally signs up for an overnight stay at a mental health clinic but she’s not crazy. or is she? no, she’s not. about 25mins in one of the other patients tells her the clinic is just an insurance scam in which they keep patients in order to collect insurance money. turns out he was correct. Inexplicably, the woman’s stalker for the past two years gets hired and totally tortures and gaslights her and it’s such an improbable and unbelievable situation that the viewer starts to wonder if maybe she’s hallucinating but she’s not.

2010: The Year We Make Contact

Weird bastard of a sci-fi movie: it's well shoot, intriguing, engaging but at the same time a follow up o a film that, arguably, is the worst absolute worst candidate for a sequel. Add some now antiquated plot stuff (USSR still existing in 2010) and it's easy to understand why it's languished a bit legacy wise.

Nonetheless it's a worth a watch. Despite eviscerating the mystery of 2001 to a great degree it nonetheless follows Arthur C. Clarke's vision of the franchise (his dynamic with Kubrick is akin to Lynch and Frost in relation to the universe Twin Peaks - the vague artistry versus the fleshed out mythology). The set pieces and aesthetics alone are excellent and worth checking out. Prime example of retro-futurism porn. There's also a well-meaning science > politics theme that is presented without being too hokey and heavy-handed. Even though the cold war is long over it's still relevant. 

Great news everyone! They're rebooting RoboCop again, Neil Blomkamp is directing, script by the Terminator 6 writer. So excited!

I watched Leviathan (1989) today. I always wanted to watch it when I was a kid cause it looked cool at Blockbuster, never have in all the years since I was a child...caught it on TV today and watched as much as I could...had to keep flipping to other channels because it was so fucking bad. Shitty mashup of Aliens/Abyss/The Thing/maybesomeotherstuff and it was just...it was fucking terrible. Wretched. No redeeming qualities. Bad writing, bad acting, bad direction, bad creatures, bad effects, bad soundtrack, bad sets and lighting, just trash. Maybe fun to watch if you're drunk with friends? Otherwise, never ever view this.

this one's special for me. i remember seeing it with my mom when i was about 8 y/o in a cinema (there was no regard for mpaa ratings back in crumbling ussr). one particular scene, i think it was the one where the pair got conjoined, made me sick so my mom had to take me outside to vomit. there were no working bathrooms in that cinema so i remember vomiting by some tree outside. it was the only film that actually did that to me, the alien came close (which i also saw around that age) but didn't quite get the job done.

alien would have mentally scarred me at 8. i saw a film called bladdered or something when i was 7, it had martin clunes in it and was genuinely terrible, but there was a section where a dream sequence had a woman chopping into his stomach and really cheesy organ and blood effects and it fucked me up.
