i watched The Hunted this weekend and it was okay. a bit better than expected based on the poster, but also worse. good pacing & decent action, but also it all felt a bit neutered & rushed in ways. every aspect of the plot, dialogue, shots, etc., all was almost right, but nothing was very good. could’ve been better, would make for a good 1 season TV series thing.

the zone of interest

a really well made film. cannot fault the cinematography, score, acting, editing and overall mood... if only it had an actual fucking plot.

Your last sentence is the reason that he's directed some of the best music videos ever but it can work against him on his films.  "Under the Skin" had the same issue for me. While I relished Scarlett Johansson luring men to their death in her panties, it was all aesthetics and almost no plot...just like music videos.

"Zone" is going for the "evil as banality" trope and does it so well that you kinda get bored along with it in a way. That said, I loved this movie. It was smart to keep all the Schindler's List torture porn oblique to the Eden-like "walled garden" home. Even though it takes awhile, all the idyllic imagery can't conceal what a couple of psychopathic shits Höss and his wife are.

The soundtrack was quite IDM as well-- sounds like Demdike Stare or something. The opening title sequence did that thing with a really slow pitch drift like Nathan Fake does on "Vitesse" and I'll be dammed if that device doesn't trigger the worst dread when I hear it lol.

Sounds like Quentin Tarantino has canceled making his tenth film 'The Movie Critic' - although seems like he has not confirmed this publicly from the article

It would be interesting if he went out with some bizarre ode to 1970s sci-fi, I’m sure his head is a wheelhouse of that genre. Logan’s Run, Phase IV, Silent Running, Capricorn One, Death Race 2000, etc. Who knows what it will end up, but hopefully he’s not going to be in it.

I watched this the other week and my face was basically pic related. Felt like a feverdream where someone made an overproduced hollywood magic flick written by racist AI

Why does he have this stupid rule in the first place?

I think his reasoning is that he wants his filmography to be lean and not have any big bombs or misses. When I heard him talk about it, he compares himself to mostly classical Hollywood filmmakers who got worse as they got older, arguing that they diluted their filmmography. I saw someone on social media say that this argument does not work these days because there are filmmakers like Scorsese, Lynch, and others who put out some of their best work when they were older. I don't care if he has some stupid arbitrary rule about how many films he is going to make, but he probably should have just kept it to himself so he could do what he wants and change his mind if necessary. He also more than any other filmmaker I know of has a youthful exuberance and endless enthusiasm when it comes to film making, so even if he stops doing films proper at some point I hope he still does miniseries or something. The whole thing seems dumb to me. Just make the damn films and release them. So few people these days even care or understand the concept of auteur in film that his assumptions about directors' filmographies are based on.

I mean, he's already done the Hateful 8. I kinda liked it but that seemed to be his least well-received film ever.

I liked it too, great cast (and I also thought it was cool how much attention he put into staging the scenes given the whole thing or most of it took place in one room). His worst movie imo was his first one Resevoir Dogs, although I understand why a lot of people still really like it. But compared to what he did after it feels lackluster to me.

now that I cannot agree with at all. that's still my favourite of his and his most definitive imo.

bingo. him quitting completely at 10 films is total BS. publicity stunt for the attention. he will no doubt jump into directing TV series stuff at some point, since we know that's what most of the rest of the industry has done.

lynch is currently trying to get funding for his next film coz he doesn't have a 10 film limit 🤩

I hope he gets it. Figure he would do well to go fundraising in France, they love that guy over in France.

If Lynch does another film, it should be balls out experimental. What could he do with Ai? I’m sure he’s totally against it, I mean the guy hates mobile phones.

Men was one of the worst movies i've ever seen

I’ve gone back and watched a few other Garland movies again and watched Devs over the weekend. I think he’s an entirely shallow director, definitely at least a bit of a hack.

His films remind me a lot of what makes certain B movies bad except he has big budgets to make them look very presentable for “serious” consumption. But for the most part this is just veneer and I get big doofus vibes from him.
