does anyone know why he pulled it when he did? like, was he aware of the time, or perhaps did he just freak out? how exactly does he know when to pull it?

i think it was due to his speed. he was going so fast and was reaching the point where the parachute would have been rendered pointless.

no clue why he opened it when he did...it did seem a bit early...i'm sure they had the chute(s) set to automatically deploy at a certain altitude (as with all jumps), but he deployed well prior to that cutoff...

 

edit: in answer to Frankie, no, he was already slowing down due to atmosphere...that's the whole point

yeah, im really interested to hear his take on personal awareness of what was going on....there was one point when they were shooting it on the infrared? camera, and he was 360 flipping while still going 600 plus mph...i would imagine that would be ridiculously disorienting.

Well as you probably heard the sound between him and control was a bit fucked, plus he kept saying his visor was fogged up, so he probably just pulled it to be safe, probably had no idea where he was in relation to the ground. Falling at that speed I'd be thinking I'd hit the ground at any moment.

yep, was just about to post that it was prolly because of the visor fogging. Probably couldn't see the altimeter on his wrist.

To be honest that .gif is the best bit. Otherwise it's a white dot with a black background,followed by a parachute.

yeah the 2 hour ascent and then the jump off the edge was the best bit, and then the skillz landing of course.

i don't mean he was going faster. but that he was reaching the Altitude minimum of the Parachute (should have been more clearer on that). though when it comes to parachutes i don't know much about them.

it's pretty fuckin incredible that a man can travel so fast without more damage. i was worried about him when it was rising above the 120,000 mark. Why was Kittinger telling him he was at 100,000 when he was 20,000 feet higher?
