Reminds me of Hoodie's thread.

I'm not even gunna try and rationalize with you on this one. I'm generally just done dealing your adversity and lack of dependability. The lineup is no reason not to go. But yeah, if you really ditch edc, it'll definitely be one of the biggest fuck-ups on your part thus far. And that's all i wanna say"

An eloquent answer to the question - you can really sense his frustration about it all. Derrick May is a great man !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I think there's a point where you can't fight such phenomenon. He's right though, it comes and goes, can't be resentful about it. The history of who really matters in electronic and dance music will remain.

I really like his view of EDM being completely disconnected from electronic music. I think it's a great point. Most of the artists who come out of that scene don't really seem to care about music. They don't know about any of the history of it, and don't even have the slightest idea or interest in what other types of electronic music might be out there. They're just doing it because it's popular, and they'll probably give it up as soon as the fad drops off. If all the influence comes from a handful of artists who are already disconnected, why should anyone consider EDM related to electronic music? Or even more absurdly, competition... it's not as if bros, pill poppers & white trash are ever going to care about composition, rhythm, emotion, atmosphere, etc. All they're in it for is the rush

edit:

plus, I mean, this should be pretty obvious anyway. you can say the same about any pop

music = art

anything made with the express purpose of getting money =/= art

pop =/= music

Ah, well, I had actually considered this when I said that. The way I see it is, with the true masters, such as with Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Titian, El Greco, Da Vinci, etc. they already had a great desire to make art, and as commissions from the church were just about the only way to make money by painting at that period, they did primarily religious paintings so that they could afford to do what they loved. Their paintings still shine through with creativity and emotion, and the religious characters are, for the most part, merely convenient subjects.

There is a distinction there as well, because there are many paintings by lesser known artists that do not have any of the uniqueness of the masters, that display religious figures in a very obvious and straightforward manner. I do not consider those to be art, because yes, exactly, they were done for money & with no real creative drive.

No lol required. A big part of what happened in Detroit is due to artists like Tangerine Dream getting played on "The Electrifying Mojo" and inspiring artists like Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Mad Mike etc. Tangerine Dream are the kings, and IMO, up there with Kraftwerk in terms of what they were doing at the time.

it's like you're saying that, as if it's something that invalidates his opinion here. whether he makes music anymore or not is completely irrelevant.

he's 100% right.

it's the same as Trance music, when that was massive. It had it's time, and died away. Same as what we like to call around these parts as 'scouse house' (if you've ever heard of Scooter, you know the shit I'm talking about), it was massively popular for a while, and then disappeared.

'EDM' will have it's time, and will disappear.

I don't know, but when you hear him talk about his perfectionism with regard to performing live, it's not hard to imagine that it could be the same with producing. So maybe him not producing anymore shows a lot more respect for music than some dick churning out generic crap trax by the dozen.

But all of this is still completely irrelevant...

his point is still entirely valid, and dare I say, correct.

I agree?

Just adding that "exerting effort" isn't necessarily a good thing IMO.

Oh yeah, to be honest in that kind of discussion (which IMO is completely off topic) I can actually see both sides.

I don't know what EDM is. can someone explain in a few words? Is it basically the evolution of bedroom music? Is it just crappy electronic artists who just hit play in ableton? I really don't know what it is.
