And how is it a new thing? How is it not just what dj's have been playing for 20 years? How is house not EDM? Afterall, house is electronic music and people dance to it. How will it die out when people are still dancing to electronic music in clubs just like they have been since the late 80's?

Plus, EDM is an umbrella term for 60% of every genre of electronic music.

How is that a facepalm?

Historically, the previous generation has always been skeptical of the merits of the current one.

They said the Frank Sinatra was bubblegum.

They said the Beatles were bubblegum.

They said sample-based music was garbage.

They said hip-hop was garbage.

Etc

Of course, sometimes the previous generation is right. But that is where things get subjective.

Damn kids, enjoying the wrong music. They should listen to what we tell them to listen to.

^yeah I've seen the term "EDM" in published articles since the 90s - in that aspect I don't get the facepalm either. That said everyone is referring to EDM as it's been coined and used by musicians and music journalists...so much so that mainstream magazines are calling music "EDM" referring to it as a scene and genre and essentially treating it like a vague social movement, which is honestly more annoying than the term itself.

Yep, the pioneer is right. Dance music keeps getting worse and worse.

Also, "EDM" is the only music genre label worse than "IDM".

I wouldn't flat-out say it's getting worse at all. Too much of a blanket generalization. In fact while I don't personally enjoy Aoki, Deadmau5, Guetta, Skrillex, etc. I've heard far FAR worse club and dance music than their "hits." There's always very popular medicore and derivative music out there.

So is EDM just mainstream electronic music? That is one thing I'm hearing. The other definition from this thread is club music, so boilerroom and xlr8r and fact mag and resident advisor are all in on it. I think it's a made up thing and doesn't actually represent anything real.

The most I can say is that maybe it represents the side of electronic music that is becoming more popular among people who previously listened to indie. For example, there are people who have no clue about electronic music, as in they don't know who AE are, but listen to SBTRTK for some reason.

Well SBTRKT has his roots in DJing and the UK dance scene. Also, his music gets played on MTV and CW shows, I don't expect to see "now playing '90101-5l-l" from Quaristice BUY ON iTunes!" scrolling on the bottom of 15 and Pregnant.

Also, those names like SBTRKT without vowels are popular, the more x's and the longer the better. "AE" is the complete opposite of that.

I think I'd rather listen to SBTRKT and the like in a club, because you know you can dance to it.

Yeah I agree. There is also the whole celebrity name switcheroo aka Com Truise, and that whole post chillwave beatgaze stuff.

But who is responsible? Because there is plenty of crap to go around, from the US and UK.

What do you mean rather? As opposed to what?

As opposed to AE yeah. Sorry, I thought about making it clearer but couldn't be bothered to click Edit.

EDM is short for electronic dance music, but that explanation is misleading. The last few years EDM has been used by dance music journalists (mostly in the US) to describe stuff like Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Skrillex, David Guetta - things like that.

Basically it's a stupid label, just like IDM or "indie". The literal meaning doesn't say very much about the music in question.

^good, succinct run-down

Probably as opposed to AE.

Id like a bitta both.

ditto, regardless comparing Autechre and SBTRKT is like comparing a-p5lels and ORNGS

thanks zkreso. I knew what it stands for, I just needed a handle on how it was being used. I don't think anyone dances to skrillex though, they just listen to it while driving or playing COD.

Why would you think a thing like that?

anything that can replace idm name is a good thing. if you dont like edm then make your own name that's better?

I love a good rant. Where can I read the interview? Cant access youtube here and rants come across better in print

I like Derrick May's strings of life and one other pianoy track whose name eludes me. But which of his other tracks are good?

Just get the Innovator comilation. Or if you really need a single track Icon (Montage Mix) is one of my favorites and the one that comes to mind right now.

I swear people actually listen to that music and go to see it.

all dance music is electronic dance music anyway.

unless it's adm (acoustic dance music?) and played on bongos, etc.

dunno why people can't just call it dance music, or electro, or techno, etc. etc.

the names are already there and have been for nearly 30 years.

fuckin journalists and idiot youvs.
